Some Important Terms :

 Gram Atomic Mass (GAM) : When atomic mass of an element is

expressed in grams. i.e. mass of 1 moles.

 Gram Molecular Mass (GMM) : When molecular mass is

represented in grams. i.e. mass of 1 mole molecules.

Question : What is relative mass and actual mass of 1 Ca(OH)2
molecule?
Solution : In Ca(OH)2
Relative molecular mass = 40 + 2 (16 + 1)
= 74 a.m.u.
Actual Mass = 74 × 1.67 × 10–24 g
= 1.23 × 10–22 g

Question : Calculate the relative mass and actual mass of
1 molecule of C6H12O6 (Glucose) ?

Solution : Relative molecular mass = 6(12) + 12(1) + 6(16)

= 72 + 12 + 96
= 180 a.m.u.
Actual mass = 180 × 1.67 × 10–24 g
= 3 × 10–22 g

Mole (n)
One mole is the amount of a substance that contains as many
entities or particles as there are atoms in exactly 12 g (or 0.012 kg)
of the C-12 isotope.

 1 mole = 6.02 × 1023 entities ( atoms / molecules / ions / e– / p / n)

 Here 6.02 × 1023 is known as Avogadro Number ( NA)

Ideal Gas Equation :
PV = nRT

P  Pressure (atm) R  Universal gas constant

V  Volume (L)  8.314 JK–1 mol–1
R  Universal gas constant  0.082 L atm K–1mol–1
n  Number of moles  0.083 L bar K–1 mol–1
T  Temperature (K)  2 Cal K–1 mol–1

NTP  T = 273 K, P = 1atm

STP  T = 273 K, P = 1 bar

If n = 1 PV = nRT

At NTP  (1) (V) = 1 (0.082) × 273

V = 22.4 L mol–1

• 1 mole of any gas at STP/NTP occupy same volume i.e. 22.4 L.

Molar volume :
It is the volume of 1 mole of any gas at NTP i.e. 22.4 L
