About My Portfolio
This portfolio was made so that I can show off what I have learned from this class,
and show off just how much I have improved. The work that I selected shows that I have made
incredible progress this term. In the beginning of the quarter there were many things that I had to
revise in my essays, and they took me twice as long to write as well.

There are many things that I have learned about myself this quarter. I

have learned that if I do not over-think my papers while I am writing and answering them, and
stop trying to make them perfect (until the end), writing becomes much easier for me. This
portfolio not only shows everyone how I have progressed, but it also shows what I have learned
about myself as a writer. It contains not only my best works, but also my mistakes, and through
the work in here I am able to see the mistakes that I commonly make while writing such as over-
generalizing things and writing about something before I completely understand it myself.
However there are also things that I realized works well for me in my writing. Unlike what I
thought in the beginning of the quarter, I write much better when I make a general outline and
write out the paper without correcting myself as I go.

ASSIGNMENT:

Compare & Contrast the Philippines' Traditional & Progressive Curriculum

Traditional curriculum is just merely saying on the body of subjects or subject matter
prepared by the teachers for the learners. In this curriculum teachers are in authority of the
learning process. While progressive curriculum talks about the actualization all the written
materials. Simply put, traditional curriculum is a more linear approach to learning while
progressive curriculum provides more hands-on research, sudden program detours, and a chance
to learn things in the field. Traditional schools focus on the teacher and what they teach and
progressive schools focus on the students and how they can learn.

The similarities between traditional and progressive curriculum is that it is both

concentrating in the students learning through the teacher’s capability. It provides all method and
strategies for the development of the learners.

ACTIVITY:

“My Role in the Implementation and Improvement of the Curriculum”

I/we learners are the very reason a curriculum is developed. They are the ones who are
directly influenced by it. Learners in all levels make or unmake the curriculum by their active
and direct involvement. The learners are the very reason a curriculum is developed. They are the
ones who are directly influenced by it. Learners in all levels make or unmake the curriculum by
their active and direct involvement. The learners are critical element in the entire process of
curriculum implementation since learners hold the key to what is actually translated and adopted
from the official designed curriculum that is meant for them. Learners influence the teacher in the
selection of learning experiences because the school consists of many levels and class grades
calling upon the teacher to prepare for the disparities among the learners for instance individual
differences between the slow learners and the quick learners. Therefore a teacher selects the
suitable learning methods and teaching aids to suit each category of learners. The learner plays
the role of exhibiting desirable discipline both in and outside the classroom through maximum
obedience to the school rules and regulation and attending to the class work and the entire school
program. For example doing all assignments, tests and examinations yield into some level of
desirable learning.

For the implementation of curriculum to be effectively done, the learner should be

physically, mentally and emotionally available to the teacher for instruction so that the planned
program in implemented. Curriculum should base on general student needs for population, and
where we students need to get at the end of the program. Especially in online curriculum,
teachers can't spring huge projects on students the week they are due. Curriculum is constructed
with the learner as its central focus. Yet the voice of the learner is largely excluded from the
curriculum design and implementation process for its improvement.

REFLECTION:

What is most striking about Philippine curriculum development are the implied and
resulting shifts it has undergone due to changing cultural, social and political environments. The
demands of Philippine society then, and those of Philippine society now, interlaced with global
trends and demands, yields a system that is a far cry from what it was before colonization and
multicultural integration.

It must be noted that existing and implemented curriculum were very much – and still is –
dependent on the standards of living, needs and social demands specific to each time period. For
instance, education during precolonial times, despite the existence of a writing system (Alibata),
is described as non-formal, less structured and geared more toward life skills that were
concurrent to that time. Note that the lifestyle of pre-colonial Filipinos was dictated by their
living environment – fertile land and greenery meant living on farming, hunting and gathering;
life near the shores meant abundant fishing and extensive trade with other tribes and islands. Due
to their dependence on the surrounding natural environment, pre-colonial Filipinos were also
nomadic – something which is still practiced by existing indigenous tribes today and currently
poses challenges to educators and schools who deal with students from said backgrounds. As a
result, the content of curriculum centered on the necessities – learn how to fish, how to farm, how
to write to keep records for trade, etc. Society then was also largely matriarchal and animistic in
some areas, while the practice of Islam and having a datu as leader was strong in Moro-occupied
neighboring islands. Hence practiced leadership, spirituality and religion were also great
determinants of the curriculum and teaching-learning process. The Koran was the textbook for
some, and what was taught and learned depended on the dictates and whims of the current datu or
head priestess in the various islands.

The entry of the Spanish brought with it a strong, and perhaps, forced cultural shift in
many aspects of pre-colonial Philippine culture. What was to be taught and learned underwent a
completely alien change and was subject to imposed limitations. Characteristic to colonizing
nations of the past, religion and evangelization were equated with education in the colonies,
coupled with basic skills in arithmetic, reading and writing. The language of the learned was
inevitably Latin and Spanish and thus, the Alibata took a backseat. However, the Spanish did
leave a beneficial inheritance to Philippine curriculum and education by introducing an
extensively knowledge-driven approach to learning. Using parts and passages of the bible that
were allowed, and Latin, they introduced to Philippine society the rote learning technique, a
learning skill that, though old-fashioned, is still effective and necessary in some areas of learning
to this day.

Having been given an overview of the hodge-podge of changes and shifts in Philippine
curriculum development, one must realize that these all occurred due to cultural, social, political
and economic circumstances over time. Bringing to mind the present ongoing changes in the
Philippine educational system and curriculum, one can conclude that these too are brought about
and are subject to current social, political and economic conditions within the Philippines itself
and in the field of globalized education.

It is also important to cite that though the shift in the system is necessarily called for by
internal and external factors, even more relevant is the need to inculcate in the system something
which seems to have been overlooked for centuries since the coming of the colonists – an
authentically Filipino curriculum. If one looks at the systems implemented in other countries,
there is always an integrated cultural identity unique to the nation itself. Despite similar
structures and goals with other nations, American education remains authentically American,
Chinese education is authentically Chinese, Malaysian education is authentically Malaysian, and
so are many others. Though not free of their own obstacles and shortfalls, many other nations
have opened themselves to a more globalized education without abandoning to some extent, the
unique identity that lies at the core of their set curriculum and educational system.

Looking at such a jumble of historical influences and changes in our education system
and curriculum, the challenge is to identify and nurture what sets Philippine education and
curriculum apart and what can strengthen Filipino learners, educators and other beneficiaries of
education, not just to satisfy international perspectives or to meet global demands, but to bring
about individual and societal growth from within the system itself.

My Learning Goals
Learning is an essential part of life. The more you learn, the more you need to learn.

Attitude toward personal growth and self-development through continuous learning is an

important factor in how you succeed in life. In this article, I have highlighted some learning goals
to help you become a better version of yourself and be more successful.
My Approach to Learning
As a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a
degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this
maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen
and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way
avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has
been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and
acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me
to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a
student, has made a tremendous impact on my life.

Self Assessment
As a learner I realize it has been a progressive or cumulative effect on the information I
have learned, understand, practice, and applied. When I first started in college I was very quiet,
conservative and reserved in the way in which I process information. But as I have continued in
my studies I have seen the shift from reserved to assertive by keeping an open mind when it came
to learning. So, in process of time I have changed my learning strategies based on my
development as a student and the different situation in which I have encountered over the course
of my college years.

As a learner I know how to organize myself to meet deadlines and accomplish my goals at
the same time I don’t allow myself to go the extra mile to exceed in my studies. As a learner
when I am given new task or assignments. I usually feel confident enough to do them.

I ask questions if I need to and take breaks when needed. I think the best lesson I have
learned is that taking your time to do something right away produces good result instead of
hurrying to just finish, quality will always outdo quantity. As a learner I would rather do a good
quality paper then a rushed paper turn in something for a grade.

Common Reference Level

I can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at
the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce myself and others and can ask and
answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things
they have.
MY
PERSONAL
CORNER
All About Me

I am a student who lives in Aurora Province with my family. All my friends are from the
Province too. Like many people who are residents of the town, I did my schooling in 12th in a
school in the province.

Now I’m doing my bachelor’s in the town. While many people have dreams of becoming
doctors and lawyers, I have always wanted to be a teacher. I don’t remember when I fell in love
in teaching and children, but over the years, my passion for teaching has increased. Over the past
few months, I have started living this dream, and it gives me so much joy. My parents have
always supported my dreams and aspirations. According to them, the only way to achieve all
your goals is to work very hard and never give up on them. They have never imposed themselves
and demanded that any of their children become what they want us. Instead, they wanted us to
choose careers and a life that will give us joy and stability.

There are many things I have to learn and want to learn. The first thing that I want to learn
is to master art and creativity. While making those things, I realize the happiness and satisfaction
are get from painting. One of the art I want to learn correctly is watercoloring. It’s a painting that
I have started loving, and knowing how to do watercolor arts in my room really makes me happy.

My School

Education in Philippines has made significant progress over the years. Both private and
public schools facilitate education for everyone and follow the same regulations for teaching
curriculum. All schools incorporate extracurricular activities into the school systems, which
motivates the learners and help them in realizing their talents and building their personalities.

My school is a private institution that is located in Brgy. 01 Maria aurora, Aurora. It was
established in 1963 and it has been in operation ever since. The school is well equipped in terms
of facilities as we have a gym, a library, and clinic our classes are modern, the computer labs are
functional. I joined this school in the year 2018 and I have been able to learn a lot about the
school. The education I have received is quality because I have developed in all aspects of life.

My school is one of the best schools of the town. All of our teachers follow strict
discipline. They teach us very kindly. They love us like our parents. I pray God to give everyone
the best place to study like my school.
My Family

I love my family and can’t imagine my life without them. It is natural to love one’s
family. We grow up with our parents taking care of our needs, our grandparents loving us
endlessly and our siblings being partners in crime in whatever we do and hence we are bound to
form a deep bond with them.

My mother keeps the entire house neat and clean. She organizes everything so well that
we don’t have to waste our time looking for things. She also shops for us and takes us out to park
and malls. She loves us dearly and takes care of all our needs. My father works very hard to
ensure we live comfortably. Our home is filled with love and laughter. Our parents and
grandparents have taught us to share and care and live cordially with everyone. This is a great life
lesson and I am sure it will help me do well personally as well as professionally as I grow.
My Friends

The one person in the world that will give you equal love and devotion like your parents and
lovers is your best friend. My best friend is Shanikka. We both study in the same school. We also
live in the same locality but not too close. My best friend Shanikka and I spend most of the time
together doing the things we like to do. We enjoy our life according to our needs and wishes.

My best friend is the person on whom I can truly count on all through my life. Whenever I need
help or support, my best friend is always there for me. We have lived moments together and have
created memories that will remain throughout my life.
