1. What is Makabayan?

- Makabayan is one of the five learning areas in the Basic education Curriculum. Furthermore it
is an integrated learning subject composed of Philippine history, political economic system, local
cultures, crafts, arts, music and also local games. Makabayan word which also means love to
one’s country or the so called Patriotism that helps and hones students with the identity of
being a Filipino citizen.

2. What is the significance of Makabayan to the learners?

-Students as a Filipino Citizen must have to develop the personal and National self-identity
which where we can say that we are Filipinos of our very own beloved country. Makabayan as
one of the learning areas to be studied in the Basic Education Curriculum has a significant to
the Filipino students for it helps them to be more familiar and find the essence of being a true
Filipino by their action and thinking. Likewise it helps them to be not an alien of the land where
they are born.

3. What are the challenges encountered in the planning and implementation of the Curriculum
integration in Makabayan?

-First, focusing on the difficulties in fully articulating the ideal curricular elements. Second,
Constraints in the implementation and lastly, weak conceptualization of the learning in the
context of Philippine education according to the study of Bernardo and Mendoza (2009). On the
other hand curriculum needs to be updated and also adaptive since the environment and
educational system is changing amidst of globalization.

C. ANALYSIS

In this concept, I conclude that Curriculum Integration is….

Not just only focusing on the particular lesson on that subject but also it needs to be integrated
with the other subject. Furthermore it will make the students more aware of the connection
between the content areas and most of all challenging the students to be more critical thinkers.
To sum it up curriculum integration dissolves the boundaries among the different disciplines of
subject areas.
How Curriculum Integration played an important role in the improvement of facilitation of
learning and instruction using integrative and interactive learning process of various disciplines
in social studies?

-As we all know social studies has a broad discipline. We have the so called integrated studies
wherein it brings together the diverse disciplines in a comprehensive manner, enabling the
students to develop a meaningful understanding of the complex topic. Integrative and
interactive learning process of various disciplines in social studies also help the students to be
more participative and active in the teaching learning process since the teacher use such
instructions according to the capacity and skills of the students. By doing this, greater
understanding and application of social studies concepts can be achieved and make the learning
fun.
