Lesson 1 Establishment of Learning Environments That Are Responsive to Community

Contexts
Community is considered an important resource for learning. This lesson will help you demonstrate
how the learning environment can be a source of information that is responsive to the community contexts.
The objectives of this lesson are the following:
1. analyse how the learning environment can affect student learning;
2. observe how to create a culturally responsive learning environment; and
3. observe how teachers contextualize teaching and learning activities.

Education Theory

As the African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." For every learning institution, there
is a community with prevailing culture that influences the learning environment. Bickford and Wright (2018)
define community as the social context of the students and their environment that consists of people with a
common purpose, shared values, and agreement on learning goals.
Community can be considered a great source of knowledge; therefore, it is important to understand
its role in engaging teachers and students in learning. Meaningful learning happens in an environment that
adapts to the context of the community. Hence, learning environment must be responsive to the community
context that requires an understanding of cultural beliefs and practices, languages, history, race, ethnicity,
and perspectives from different cultural backgrounds.
The following are suggested strategies to foster a learning environment that is responsive to
community context:
1. establishment of a school-community partnership to foster positive relationship and to explore
common goals that may improve school programs and policies as well as the community;
2. promotion of cultural and traditional activities to increase the teacher's cultural awareness and to
preserve local traditions, beliefs, and values;
3. utilization of culturally responsive teaching approaches to integrate teaching and learning practices
that are within the experience and cultural frame of students; and
4. contextualization and localization of learning content and materials to create a relevant and
meaningful learning experience for the students.

Christ the King College de Maranding formly, Christ the King High School, is located in the
heart of the progressive Barrio of Maranding. It is one of the five secondary institutions in the town
of Lala. It is a Catholic Institution of higher learning and administered by the Columban Priests of
Iligan Diocese. It is divided into different areas such as the College, Elementary, High School and
Senior High School departments. It also has Administration building and other faculties.

 Provide a brief historical background and demographic profile of the community. Complete the
following information:

 Describe the physical and psychological environment of the community:


The environmental of the school is wide clean and beautiful for conducive learning. It has a
beautiful spot for studying of students and teachers. It has Nara trees and different flowers around
the school campus. The nature of the school was good and productive.

 Identify cultural and traditional practices/beliefs within the community.


Maranding is a barangay in the municipality of Lala in the province of Lanao del Norte. It is
population as determined by the 2020 Census was 11,897. This represented 16.2% of the total
population of Lala.

B. Interview the cooperating teacher. Ask the following questions:


1. Does the school have active school-community partnership?
Yes, the school has active school-community partnership. In fact, it holds some of the
major events during the town fiesta and is together in implementing the Anti-Bullying Policy. All
members of the school community, which includes the students, parents and guardian, and the
community members are aware of the negative effects of the bullying can have to victims and
school in general and ensures the students can work in the environment without fear.

2. Who are involved in the school - community partnership?


All members of the school community such as the teachers, faculty personnel, students,
parents, and guardians, and the community members are involved in the school-community
partnership.

3. Does the school engage members of the community in school activities?


Yes, the community members are one of the stakeholders of the school. They help in
providing the needs of the school. They are also invited in some special events and activities of
the school.

4. What are the school programs/projects supported by the community?


The school programs/projects supported by the community are Community outreach
programs and other school equipment that are donated by the community members. TESDA
courses are also subsidised by the government.

5. What are the activities conducted by the school to raise cultural sensitivity and awareness?

Some of the activities conducted by the school to raise cultural sensitivity and awareness
are during the Buwan ng Wika and other cultural presentations during programs. Teachers and
students are encouraged to speak in Filipino and wear cultural clothes. It is also the time where
they showcase the richness of the Filipino culture through music, dances, and arts.

6. Does the school have community extension programs?


The school does indeed offer community outreach programs. In actuality, the institution
provides TESDA courses to anyone with an interest. Additionally, it takes part in projects
that benefit all community members, such as clean-up campaigns.
7. What are the programs/projects extended by the school to the community?
One of the programs/projects extended by the school to the community is offering TESDA
courses to all members of the community who are interested in acquiring vocational skills.

8. Are the teachers aware of the background of the community where the school is located?
Yes, the teachers are aware of the background of the community where the school is
located. Most of the teachers are residents of Lala and nearby municipalities.

9. How does the school promote contextualization and localization to its teachers?
The curriculum of the school is designed and planned based on the needs of its
community where it belongs. The lessons are contextualized and localized based on their
availability in the community and are relatable to the students who belong to the same
community.

10. Are the lessons contextualized?


Yes, the lessons are contextualized. The students are actively involved in the learning
process. Lessons employ authentic materials and assessments. Moreover, the students can
apply and relate to their acquired knowledge for their everyday living.

Since students pick up knowledge from peers, adults, and other community members, the
community has an impact on the learning environment. The community is crucial to students
learning since its members behavior affects how they learn, and encouraging stringer parental and

In terms of geography, cultural diversity, and individuality, we localize and contextualize
the curriculum and the usage of learning resources for the reason it helps teachers and students

3. What strategies are you going to use in order create a culturally responsive learning environment?
Our ability to have a special impact on our pupil’s live must be unmatched as teachers.
Incorporating intelligent, inclusive instruction can benefit children in ways that go well beyond the
classroom, because not all students want to learn from all professors because they might not feel
valued, one of the most effective tactics. I will utilize is to develop relationships with the students, in
order for the students to feel respected, valued, and recognized for who they are, teachers must
make an effort to build relationships with their students.

The information acquired from the preliminary exercise allows me to review where I need
to make adjustments and adapt my techniques in order to increase my abilities to learn
and teach. Simply put, it makes me better teacher and student.

Lesson 2 Engagement of Parents and the Wider Community in the Educative Process
The school-community partnership plays a very important role in developing and implementing
school policies, programs, and projects. This lesson will help you understand the importance of building
relationship with parents/guardians and the wider community to facilitate involvement in the educative
process. The objectives of this lesson are the following:
1. observe how teachers collaborate with parents and members of the community;
2. observe how teachers organize a parent-teacher association (PTA) meeting;
3. observe how teachers deal with parents in addressing various issues and concerns; and
4. analyze how parents and the wider community affect the educative process.

Education Theory

A 21st century learning environment both gives and gets support from families and the local
community ("Partnership for 21st Century" n.d.). In the Philippines, the partnership between teachers and
parents is established through the organization of a parent teachers association (PTA). A PTA is organized
to provide a forum to discuss issues and solutions relating to the total school program, and ensure full
cooperation of parents in the implementation of such program. It is also organized to encourage
coordination with members of the community to address relevant concerns and provide support to the
school for the promotion of common interest (DepEd2009).
According to George Lucas Foundation (cited in "Partnership for 21st Century" n.d.), strong home-
school connections result in the following outcomes:
 children do better in school when their parents are involved in their education;
 after-school learning opportunities promote student achievement;
 community youth development programs spur academic development; and
 school that integrates community services reduces risk and promotes resilience in children.
Teachers should build a good relationship with parents and the wider community to improve the
learning environment. They must be equipped with necessary competency in dealing with stakeholders to
implement properly the school's program and facilitate the discussion on issues and concerns relating to
the students' academic performance.

periodical PTA meeting both for General and Classroom. The said meetings are postponed due to
pandemic.

The Parents- Teachers Association meeting is usually held every grading period of the
school year. There are also emergency meetings sometimes in the middle of the school year.

4. What are usual issues and concerns raised by stakeholders during PTA meetings?
The usual issues and corners raised by stakeholders during PTA meetings are school
projects, issues regarding students’ behaviour and election of PTA officers.

5. Are the issues and concerns raised during PTS meeting/s properly addressed?

federated officers, together with the principal and teachers, handle it carefully and professionally.

the school programs. In fact, they hold meetings for suggestions and recommendations before
programs are implemented.

7. Do parents and members of the community provide full support to school programs and activities?

activities. This is manifested through continuous financial support and the number of attendees
during meetings where these programs are discussed.

8. Describe the relationship of teachers with parents and members of the community.
The teachers and the parents have strong relationship. They worked together to help the
students achieve learning goals. The members of the community and the teachers have great
collaboration since they work together to support the students financially and emotionally.

and developing intro contributing members of society, it also strengths the ties between
parents and schools.

By including parents and community people in many aspects of the school’s
programming, it will be possible to make the work successful while also improving students
learning and performance. The first of these tactics is partnership, in which parents and

3. What have you learned from observing a PTA meeting?
The parent-teacher Association (PTA) is a collaboration between parents and teachers
that aims to improve education and enrich the lives of the pupils enrolled at the school.
PTA, in my opinion, is a fantastic venue for discussing academic development and
advancement based on the classroom. It is a good approach for parents and teachers to
communicate about how their kids have been performing academically. In my experience,
a student’s educational path can be greatly aided by the combination of parental care and
instructor criticism. With this PTA meeting, the teacher and parents are collaborating and
working in cooperation for the student’s education because they work as a team to help
students to be successful.

Lesson 3 Professional Ethics
Professional ethics serves as a guide in practicing one's profession. It encompasses personal and
professional standards of behaviour. This lesson will help you demonstrate an awareness of the existing
laws and regulations that apply to the teaching profession. It will help you understand the responsibilities
specified in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. The objectives of this lesson are the following:
1. observe how the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers is being practiced;
2. analyse the importance of the Code of Ethics to teachers and students; and
3. analyse the professional and social accountability of teachers.

Education Theory

The kind of teacher you are and the way that you portray yourself matters a lot to your employer,
the community, and the stakeholders. As role models, teachers are expected to embody good ethics, which
is a fundamental requirement of a profession. Good ethics is based on moral principles and appropriate
conduct that one should observe as a professional.
Pursuant to Section 6 of RA 7836, the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers was promulgated
by virtue of PRC Board Resolution No. 435, series of 1997. In accordance with the preamble of the Code of
Ethics for Professional Teachers, teachers are referred to as duly licensed professionals who possess
dignity and high moral values as well as technical and professional competence in the practice of their
noble profession. They strictly adhere to, observe, and practice this set of ethical and moral principles,
standards, and values (PRC 1997).
The Code of Ethics covers all public and private school teachers in basic education, technical-
vocational education, as well as non-formal education. It articulates the professional accountability and
responsibility of teachers with the state, the community, the teaching profession, the higher authorities in
the profession, the learners, the parents, the business, and as a person.
Relatively, this set of ethical standards also serves as sufficient ground for the imposition against
the erring teacher of the disciplinary action consisting of revocation of teacher's license or suspension from
the practice of profession (PRC 2015). The teacher as a model should religiously practice the Code of
Ethics for Professional Teachers to set a good example not only to the students but most especially in the
teaching profession and the community they serve.

It anchors goodness for everyone’s sake and uphold morality. Hence, it reflects the
professional teachers’ code of ethics.

3. Are there provisions in the manual regarding disciplinary actions or sanctions for misbehaviour,
misconduct, or unethical practices of teachers?
Basically, there is nothing perfect ever since. Yet, every manual has to undergo
amendments within the time duration on achieving better conditions and maintaining good

establishment of rules among involved parties. Same with our school’s faculty manual. It is
dynamic. It has to be changed whether there is something needs to pay more attention and remain

There are these various and quite numbers of orientations being conducted now and then
in the department and even inside the school premises concerning with the code of ethics. It is one
of the overused topics to teachers.

must be dedicated for it is part of their pride. Every

for betterment.
Article V: The Teachers and The Profession Teachers must work with each other for they
make up one community. They shall be imbued
with the spirit of professional loyalty, mutual
confidence, faith in one another, self-sacrifice for
the common good, and full cooperation with
colleagues. When the best interest of the learners,
the school, or the profession is at stake in any
controversy, teachers shall support one another.
Article VI: The Teacher and Higher Authorities in Teachers must be honest and respectful. They

long as it’s not affecting his/her work. They should
also maintain a good reputation with respect to the
financial matters.
Article XI: The Teacher as a Person Teachers must always look up to Almighty God
or Being as their guide of their own destiny. They
should also live with dignity. And as a powerful
role-model to the community, they must live with a
very good personality and be an inspiration to
people around them.

As I observe, the teacher act professionally within the school premises through they live as others
do except, as professional teachers, they tend to work outside of their school hours much more than other
professionals because if we going to imagen teacher is the most challengeable but a nobles’ profession.

Teachers must adhere to a professional code of ethics as role models for the learners.
This code guarantees that students receive an education that is fair, honest, and uncompromising.
Teachers’ primary responsibilities to their pupils are outlined in a professional code of ethics, as
well as their position in a student’s life.

3. How does the Code of Ethics influence a teacher's competence?


All acts and responses are governed by a personal code of ethics, which serves as the
foundation for distinctions in instructors’ approaches to the pupils and school-related issues. A well-
defined code of ethics will help you in navigating challenging periods in your profession.

4. In what aspect does the teacher need improvement?


The aspect that the teacher need to improvement is their knowledge and confidentiality to
teacher in the classroom and also the management of handling the class because it is the best
ways to empower learners to be active. As a teacher also we need to adopt the new technology
which is it’s better to introduce it to the classroom and personalise the learning experience of the
students so that they can compete globally.

5. How will you promote the Code of Ethics to fellow teachers?


I will promote the Code of Ethics to my fellow teacher through committing to the standards
and ethics work. I will be a responsible teacher who will love my passion and do duties with
manners that reflects my personality, so I will develop and care the individual right and obligation
so that my learners will adopt it and become better one who’s respectable by all.

An ideal teacher
In the education process, a teacher plays an important role. No teacher will ever be completely
perfect, theoretically. To become completely ideal, a teacher must have attained such a high level of
perfection that she or he no longer requires further improvement and, as a result, growth is slowed.
An ideal teacher has a good sense of humour/smiles. But this fun is not of impolite nature. An ideal
teacher also has the highest degree of integrity. The ideal teacher is susceptible to adaptation or
modification, depending on the student’s needs and abilities. Being flexible means that if students are not
interested in learning a new or even a new good lesson due to some reasons, then he is not recalcitrant
regarding straightway teaching of the lesson. Rather he talks about problems that have arisen in the
classroom and eventually gets back to the lesson.
An ideal teacher is self-confident. The ideal teacher is a model of self-confidence. It is a source of
great pleasure, and they show it in their facial expression and in their positives attitude around the school.
People always seem to have time to talk to a colleague or to do something extra for the school or the staff.
