Brain and Behaviour
Biological or organic approach to Abnormal psychology
is the belief that individuals behave strangely because
their bodies and minds are not working properly.
The physiology of behavior has received increasing
attention in recent decades. In fact, it has become one
of the important areas of contemporary research in
psychology.
Researchers in the 19th century began to think about
behavior from a physiological perspective. Many of
these early thinkers formed the foundation of current
knowledge about neuroanatomy, linking the functions
of the specific areas of the brain with thought and
behavior.
Human Nervous System
LOBES OF BRAIN
NEURONS
Neurons are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system. Neurons are responsible for carrying information
throughout the human body.

● It has been estimated that there are around 86 billion neurons in the brain; to reach this huge target,

● a developing fetus must create around 250,000 neurons per minute

Neurotransmitters and their functions
NEUROTRANSMITTERS AFFECTING PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS:

Anxiety disorders have been linked to low activity of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid).

● Schizophrenia to excess activity of dopamine.

● Depression is due to low activity of serotonin.

● Alzheimers has relations with less acetylcholine.

● Stress has relations with release of adrenaline.
