The Internal Arrangement of the Factory:

Factory or Facility layout design is necessary when building a new
facility or renovating an existing one in order to improve process flow
and minimize waste space.
Facility layout largely depends on the shape and size of the building.

Why Facility or Factory Layout is Important?

1. Layout has enormous effect on daily operations.
2. Layout dictate the distance a customer or staff member travels.
3. Layout influences the interactions and communications of the staff
members.

1. Commodity Arrangement (Product Layout)

Commodity Arrangement (Product Layout):

Product layout also called Commodity layout machinery is arranged in
one line as per the sequence of production operations. Materials are fed
into the first machine and finished products come out of the last machine.

Commodity Arrangement unique characteristics include:

1. Resources are specialized.
2. Facilities are capital intensive.
3. Processing rates are faster.
4. Material handling costs are lower.
5. Space requirements for inventory storage are lower.
6. Flexibility is low relative to the market.

Functional Arrangement (Process Layout):

Process layout also called functional layout or batch production
layout is characterized by the grouping together of similar machines based
upon their operational characteristics.

Functional Arrangement unique characteristics include:

1. Resources used are general purpose.
2. Facilities are less capital intensive.
3. Facilities are more labor intensive.
4. Resources have greater flexibility.
5. Processing rates are slower.
6. Material handling costs are higher.
