Central France
Burgundy

The best way to see the Central regions of France is on the canal!

The Canal du Nivernais

Burgundy - Vermenton
Vermenton may not be a familiar French named town to you. Do not let that worry you - its role and position in the canal structure is all important and it enjoys an idyllic position a few hundred metres off the main line of the Canal du Nivernais. This is thought by many to be the most beautiful canal in France. There is cruising in all directions from this British family-owned and managed base. A wide selection of boats in each class is available, so theres every chance that you will be able to book your first choice unless you leave it too late. Recently the local authorities have adopted the tow path as a tourist cycling track - no vehicles, and this has added to the attraction. Vermenton is also easily accessible for self drive via English / French ports. About 4 hours easy driving, most of it on uncrowded motorways. Or via train from Paris if you prefer. Please see our travel guide on pages 28 - 29 for further details. Its difficult to decide on the chief attractions of Burgundy as there are so many. Much will depend on your personal choice. For some it may be the architecture and history shaped by the Romans and the many chteaux built by warring armies and left as a legacy that can be enjoyed today. Its location at the centre of France made Burgundy a hub for transport routes throughout the ages hence the canals. Here food and wine are legendary and a whole holiday could be planned purely around this. Whether you are sailing from Vermenton or from our new base in St Florentin (see next page), Dijon can provide a wonderful pre or post holiday addition - dont miss out!

Burgundy - St Florentin
New for 2011 is our base in St Florentin. It is situated on the Canal de Bourgogne which continues east towards Dijon. The canal stretches for 242km and contains 189 locks. St Florentin is 19km east of the junction with the river Yonne, which allows you to then continue south towards Auxerre and Vermenton, or north towards Joigny, Sens and ultimately the river Seine. The World renowned wine region of Chablis is just to the east of the base, making this a perfect holiday for wine and chteaux lovers. From St Florentin to Montbard, almost 100km further down the canal, there are only 38 locks, allowing you to reach several destinations in just one day. Dont forget also that you can join the river Yonne taking you towards the Nivernais and the delights of southern Burgundy. The French authorities have recently invested heavily in the tourist facilities in the area, notably the canal towpaths which have been resurfaced to cater for cycling enthusiasts.

PLACESOFINTEREST / FACILITIES

Heading north from Vermenton, Auxerre is clearly one of the places to visit. The grandeur of the Saint Etienne cathedral is visible from the banks of the canal. Once in the city centre there is a large selection of shops to visit. The medieval town can be easily accessed from both Vermenton and St Florentin bases. Further north still is the town of Joigny which dates back to 996. It is centre of the Saint Andr winemaking district - wine is the base of the towns economy. The famous wine harvest festival takes place in October. Continuing the wine theme our St Florentin base is on the doorstep of the world renowned Chablis region. Head east towards the town of Tonnerre which produces what are thought to be some of the very best Burgundy wines. To the south of Vermenton is the small, attractive town of Clamecy. In the summer it plays host to a month long music festival called the Festival des Perthuis. The town is close to one of the largest wine making regions of Burgundy.

Canal du Midi
Many think the Canal du Midi is the best in France. But what is best? It is certainly the most dramatic linking the Mediterranean Sea near Ste with the Atlantic Ocean west of Bordeaux. Many yachts and motorboats traverse the entire length of the canal on a passage to or from the Mediterranean. However this journey is far too long a distance for a holiday. So from our base in Capestang we concentrate on the most scenic sections of the canal. You have Castelnaudary and Carcassonne to the west, or Carnon and Ste to the east. It is Capestang where you start and finish your holiday. It is situated roughly equidistant between the extremes of the stretch of the Midi that we cover, offering you several choices of itinerary. These routes cover some of the main features of the canal and you pass through such places as Homps, Carcassonne, Bziers and Castelnaudary. There is also a junction of the canal (canal de la Robine) which takes you to Narbonne. To the east you have the towns of Bziers, Agde and the Etang du Thau, all featuring en route to Carnon. The Canal du Midi was designed by the renowned canal architect and engineer Paul Riquet, and it can now boast UNESCO world heritage status. If you cannot make up your mind which route to take then we highly recommend the canal de la Robine. This descends through Narbonne to the Mediterranean coast at Port-la-Nouvelle. This excursion from the main stretch of canal is not to be missed! Narbonne is an attractive town with plenty of facilities. You can moor in the centre of the town for a day or two and enjoy its surrounds. Continue further south from the centre of Narbonne towards the coast. There are no locks along this 12 mile stretch of canal as you reach the sea, and the beach! A superb weeks itinerary.

Canal du Midi

Cruise through one of Frances most fascinating regions

PLACESOFINTEREST / FACILITIES
There are 3 routes you can choose along the Canal du Midi. West of Capestang will take you to the historic towns of Castelnaudary and Carcassonne. Carcassonne in particular features the stunning backdrop of la Cit de Carcassonne. This fortress contains some of the best medieval architecture in Europe with some parts dating back to the 5th century. Heading east of Capestang youll find the towns of Bziers, Ste and Carnon, as well as the wonder that is the tang de Thau - Frances second largest lake. The lake is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow stretch of sand. This area is surrounded by pretty coastal towns all of which rely heavily on fishing. Needless to say the seafood restaurants are very good. The town of Agde is one of the many towns you will pass through. Originally a prosperous Greek trading port, Agde is one of the oldest towns in France. Many of its buildings are built in dark volcanic rock and are well worth seeing, as is the Agde museum. Finally, heading South West you cruise in to the splendid town of Narbonne. The entrance via the canals is spectacular. After passing the first lock you pass under the Merchants Bridge, one of the few bridges left in France which is lined with houses. After passing under several more fine bridges you will be inside the town centre. Narbonne was once the leading Roman colony outside Italy. Sadly the only Roman building left intact is the Horreum near the centre. However, several fine mosaics and artefacts have been restored and can be found at the Archbishops Palace. The Canal du Midi has also invested in restoring its towpaths. Long stretches of towpath from Carcassonne to Trbes and Bziers to Agde now offer safe cycle routes a perfect way to explore the localities.

Charente
The River Charente does not interconnect with the Brittany waterways but this is still a delightful area bordered by rolling hills, graceful plains and vibrant countryside. The area is situated to the south of La Rochelle a much favoured yachting centre and close to the Ile de R which is well worth exploring when en route to the base in Sireuil. The base of Sireuil is east of Cognac and west of Angoulme, a delightful town of wonderful character and architecture. This waterway warrants careful consideration by those who wish to combine a weeks relaxed touring with a weeks boating. A superb combination in an uncrowded region. Cognac of course needs little introduction. You may know this digestif more commonly as brandy and most visitors will find a visit to the distilleries within the town an irresistible attraction - perhaps more than one visit?!

Choosing the right Boat

Having chosen a canal holiday in France, you must now decide which boat is right for you.
This is the most important decision and size matters. Do not try to squeeze too many people into too small a space - you will regret it. But space costs money so that is an issue. Our best advice is to book what you can afford. A close family may not need as much individual space as comparative strangers. This applies particularly to shower, bathroom and toilet areas, similarly sleeping areas. Study our boat layouts carefully and you should then be able to decide exactly what is right for you and your family and friends. If youre still in doubt, call us - were more than happy to help. The sleeping arrangements are possibly the most important item to consider when making your final boat selection. You will note that the sleeps and comfort numbers are different. Sleeps denotes the total capacity of the boat. This means that as well as the total number of permanent beds that are available, additional people can sleep on bunks or convertible sofas. In Comfort is the total number of permanent beds. This figure includes both single and double beds. Before making your final choice you have to consider whether any members of your party wish to have permanent beds or convertible sleeping arrangements. Each boat category has a number of anchors next to each title. This is our way of quickly indicating the quality of interior and comfort. This is by no means a definitive indication of boat, but rest assured if the boat class you have chosen has 5 anchors then you have chosen the highest class of vessel possible. Each boat type listing shows which boat base the vessel is available from. On occasions, if a previous hirer has chosen a one way journey your boat may be available from an alternative base. In road distance this will be very short and we will be able to advise you not less than 10 days before your departure. Remember if you have any queries about which boat to hire then do not hesitate to contact us at Freewheel Afloat.

All you need to know

Discounts

Discounts are available: 5% off second week of hire; 10% off third week of hire. 21 days or more discount by agreement - please call us.

Start and Finish Times

Most bases offer Friday, Saturday or Monday start and finish days. Please discuss with us at the time of booking. Pick up time is after 1500 and return should be by 0900 on the final day.

Boat Handling

I/we haven't handled a boat before - how much experience do we need? Little or none is the easy response. It's not difficult even for total beginners. However a minimal level of physical fitness is required to get on and off the boat. Hundreds perhaps thousands do it each year. If you can drive a car you should have no problem. One word of advice however. The biggest boat may benefit from an extra pair of hands or two if only for help at locks and mooring. Sadly there is now virtually no commercial traffic on French Waterways so you won't meet 30 metre commercial leviathans. Should you do so give way and keep out of the way. Get the camera out! You are insured. Behave responsibly and enjoy!

Lock Handling

Do not be deterred by locks - they are part of the experience and enjoyment and help to involve all onboard. They are an opportunity to meet people (lock keepers and other boaters) and a chance to buy produce. Take a little while to understand their operation. Where possible we will demonstrate lock operation when you take over the boat. Locks are either manned or automatic which means passing through them is not a chore.

2nd Steering Position Safety Afloat

A second steering position is an important consideration. With a second, exterior position there is better vision, and everyone can be together outside enjoying the sun and scenery. Your boat is built and assembled to exacting international standards. All boats comply with certain compulsory design features notably for gas systems, ventilation etc. Also other features specified by French regulations. Additionally there are first aid boxes, life jackets of appropriate sizes and a rescue life buoy. Life jackets should be worn by poor or non swimmers and you may wish to determine your own policy for children and at locks.

Fuel, Water and Gas

You will have sufficient fuel on board for the engine needs unless you are out for more than 2 weeks. Gas also unless you are a heavy user, in which case if can be replenished en route. Water may need replenishing each two days or so dependent on consumption. All canal side water is drinkable unless labelled "non potable".

Cooking

How much cooking do you intend to do? Probably not a lot. Remember there is a host of restaurants available for you to choose from near to the canals. You may live on salad and enjoy the wonderful French markets whether for vegetables, meats, fish, fruit or cheese. This may determine how much time you will spend in the galley and in turn that may help influence your choice of boat ie. size of the galley and equipment.

Eating and Drinking Afloat

Yes and Yes is the answer! You will decide whether to eat ashore or not. Most people lunch on board the boat and dine ashore but it doesn't matter. Just in case you arrive somewhere without a restaurant, keep sufficient supplies on board in your refrigerator. When you take over your boat at our base there are a few formalities. Firstly, we provide a thorough demonstration of the boat and its systems. Secondly there is some paperwork to be completed and signed. We issue you with a licence for the French Canals. This is a formality for which you need no qualifications. A refundable security deposit is payable against damage to the boat and its equipment - see page 27 for details. Alternatively a collision damage waiver policy can be taken out at the base to cover this risk of damage. The charge for this is approximately 10% of the security deposit but it is non-refundable. All deposits are to be paid in full in euros at the base on your arrival. We make a deposit charge against cleaning of the boat at the end of your holiday (between 80 and 150 euros according to size of boat). This is to cover us against the need for our staff to undertake exceptional work. If you leave it clean and tidy this deposit is returned in full.
