Optical Illusions
A famous illusionist has hired you to design a new type of optical illusion for a show. How will
you do it?
To make an optical illusion, you have to use light to make
people see an image that is not really there. Here is your
challenge:
• You may use only common materials and devices
approved by your teacher.
• You must use at least two different interactions of light.
• The image you create must be different from the object(s)
in at least two ways (for example,
size, orientation, color, or position).
You will then need to develop and use a model to describe how the illusion works as a result of
light wave interactions with various materials.

1. Examine the following list of materials that might be used in your optical illusion. To
help determine their properties and their possible use in your illusion, classify the
materials in the first column based on how they interact with light. The First material
is solved. (20 Points)
