Role Description

HEMS Technical Crewmember (TCM)

Operations

Role Summary
The HEMS Technical Crewmember (TCM) is primarily responsible for assisting the pilot with aviation safety
and navigation in the conduct of HEMS Missions. They are also responsible for a number of administrative
tasks associated with the safe and effective operation of the Airbase and more general support to the
Charity as directed by the Director of Operations and Operations Manager.

Responsibilities
 Assisting with the ground movement of the aircraft.
 The refueling of the aircraft and the daily fuel installation checks.
 The set up and presenting of flight briefs.
 The survey of hospital and night landing sites and the maintenance of the relevant plates in the
company landing site directory.
 The upkeep of Electronic Flight Bag and hard copy flight related documentation.
 Hangar tidiness and other aviation related duties on base.
 Monitoring the use, and routine maintenance, of flight helmets and NVG.
 The carrying out of pre-flight planning.
 The safety of the passengers on-board including any safety briefs required for relatives of casualties.
 The safe loading and unloading of equipment and patients.
 The following of routine and emergency checklists.
 Lookout and hazard and weather awareness.
 Navigation.
 Communication with external agencies.
 Monitoring of aircraft and flight instruments.
 Situational awareness during arrival and departure, particularly at night.
 Operation of Trakkabeam external light.
 Dealing with members of the public at HEMS sites.
 Perform all duties to a sufficient standard to pass an annual Technical Crew Member Line Check

The TCM is responsible for assisting the clinical team with:

 Extra assistance at scene, where possible, and if required.


 Communication at scene with the pilot.
 The packaging, loading and safe transfer of the patient to the aircraft stretcher and into the aircraft.
 Clearing from the hospital, so that they are available for another tasking as soon as possible.

In support of the Charity, the TCM may be called upon to:

 Provide support to Charity events


 Deliver presentations or talks about the work of the Charity to community groups
 Other related tasks to support the aviation requirements as directed
Person Profile
Qualities, Skills & Attributes

Essential

 Previous EMS/Police/Military helicopter crew experience


 Excellent degree of professionalism
 The ability to pass a medical in accordance with EASA Class 2 Medical or LAPL medical or
equivalent (SAS OM.5.5.1 and FSI OPS/045/2020)
 Excellent verbal communication skills
 Confident positive outlook
 Patience, flexibility and the ability to work with tact, diplomacy and integrity
 Full UK driving licence
 Right to work in UK

Desirable

 Previous NVG experience
