(50 points)

L2. since the last announcement. Once more the children stopped talking and listened.
L3. The arrival of flight two-nine-zero would be delayed at least another hour. Further
L4. information would be given the minute it became available. There was something in the
L5. girl’s voice, midway between surprise and anxiety, which seemed to communicate itself
L6. to the half dozen people sitting at the other end of the waiting room. An old woman
L7. said something to her husband, stood up, took her handbag and joined the group of
L8. children. For a time, she peered stupidly into the twilight. Finding no comfort there,
L9. she turned to Taylor and said in English, “What is become of the plane?” Her voice had
L10. the throaty, indignant lilt of a Dutch woman.

A. Transcribe the following text, dividing it into word-groups and marking stress.
(50 points)

L1. There’s a story that claims the city wasn’t really destroyed at all. Instead, through a charm
L2. known only to the King, the city and its inhabitants were whisked away and replaced by
L3. phantoms of themselves, and it was only these phantoms that were burnt and slaughtered.
L4. The real city was shrunk very small and placed in a cave beneath the great heap of stones.
L5. Everything that was once there is there still, including the palace and the garden filled
L6. with trees and flowers; including the people, no bigger than ants, but going about their
L7. lives as before, wearing their tiny clothes, telling their tiny stories, singing their tiny
L8. songs. The King knows what’s happened and it gives him nightmares.
