Professional Development Material and Plans

Based on recent conversations with members of the school faculty, a major concern this

year is the increase of lower-level ESL students in the upper grades that do not have a bilingual

or Spanish speaking teacher. The building I am currently in is a Gifted and Talented building

within an inner-city district. While there are two bilingual classes within the building, they are

for second and third grade. This year, we saw an increase in ESL students in the upper grades,

including students who are Levels I and II. The teachers want to do everything possible to help

these students succeed, however, many do not speak Spanish and are not trained in ESL. Based

on this, I feel that the most productive professional development session I could provide the staff

with would be training on Microsoft Translation tools including the built-in translator and the

translator app. Since schedules are rather busy this time of year, I feel that it would be most

beneficial for me to provide teachers with a training video of the programs that they can view

asynchronously. After viewing the video, teachers will complete a survey stating what future

training they would like on the materials and based on the responses I will schedule small group

or individual sessions.

Materials

 Video-demonstration of how to translate Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and

how to use the translation app for phrases and conversations.

Individual Coaching Sessions

For my mentee or any other teachers that request individual sessions on using these tools,

two different sessions could be provided.

 Modeling-One possible individual session could include going in and demonstrating for

the teacher how to translate documents and how to use the app with students either when

translating one-on-one or in conversation mode.

 Observation-As a coach, I can observe my mentee using the translation tools and be there

to step in should she have any trouble.
