I am not sure who oldest person in our church is, or in world but lets say 117 born 1900
Think of major history since 1900: airplane, computer, atom bombWWI&II,
Rise and fall of SovUn, man on the moon, Queen Victoria, Einstein,FDR, JFK…
But someone could easily make a case any period history last 500 years just as great
This AM look at one event and one man 500 years ago most important human history
I am thinking of the Reformation and Martin Luther

II. Martin Luther
A. Time – born 1483 +/- a year, late medieval, one church Roman Catholic,B4 Columbus
B. Question – How do I become right with God?
C. Fear – Burning fire of hell for those not right with God
D. Problem – Truth covered by layers of Roman Catholic teaching over 1000 years
Scholasticism – Latin – corruption – councils, theology….Gospel TRUTH
E. become a monk, a priest, a professor of theology
F ‘anfechtungen’ – Luther bttl w his own thots, hopelessness made real, dp agony of soul

IV. Justification By Grace Through Faith Alone

3:20 by deeds of the law no flesh justified in His sight 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28
4:3 A believed God and it accounted as righteousness, 6,9,13
4:16 it is of faith that it might be according to grace so that.. 23 imputed to A 24
5:1 having been justified by faith we have peace with God through JS 9, 16-21
8:1 therefore no condemnation to those in Christ JS
V. Reformation
Luther did not start out to reform the church, soon realized theology needed reformation
Prob RC God md U rights and U do ur part make yourself righteous, L just by faith alone
RC sick ppl in need of healing L dead ppl in need of resurrection
RC bring U to place of seeing your unworthiness but not tell U how to go forward

L undrstd he was a sinner dsrving of hell, knew not right B4 God today most not see this
Just by faith tells us how to be righteous before holy God
Just by faith gives us confidence we do not need to pay for our sins.
