year. It’s nice to meet new friends, but I’m always a little

hair smiled at me. A boy with black hair and glasses
asked my name. All the kids in my class were friendlier

My old friend Sam was there, too. Now he’s taller than

Every week people go to the supermarket to buy vegetables like

green beans and cucumbers that come from big farms. Some
supermarkets also sell fruit and vegetables from small local farms.
But most people think food from the garden is fresher and tastes
better than food from a supermarket.
Some lucky people have space to grow food in their own gardens.
For example, they grow carrots, onions, and cabbages. Many
other people do not have space at home, but sometimes they work
together to grow food in a community garden.
It’s easier than you think to grow vegetables. First you dig. Then
you plant the seeds. But remember to water the plants! And you
have to weed the garden sometimes. When the vegetables are ripe,
they are ready to pick.

Paragraphs of Opinion
In a paragraph of opinion, you express your opinion about
something. You give the reasons why you feel this way.
You can also use words and expressions that introduce your
opinion, such as I think, in my opinion, and I believe.

18 Read. How does the writer introduce opinions?

Underline the words and expressions.

Fresh Food or Canned Food?

When you shop for food, you can buy fresh food or
canned food. Which is better? I think fresh food tastes
better. Fresh food is good for you. It does not have any
extra salt or sugar. You know just what you are eating.
But you have to wash it first because sometimes it is a
little dirty.
There are some positive and negative things about
canned foods, too. In my opinion, canned food is more
convenient because it lasts longer than fresh food.
Also, with canned food you can always have fruit and

From Walking Hobby Horse

to Biking
The bicycle is not the idea of just one person. Over time,
many people contributed to its development.
The first bicycle was made of wood. It had two wheels
but no pedals. You didn’t ride it—you walked it! It was called Boneshaker
a “hobby horse” or “walking machine.”
The velocipede came next. Velocipedes had pedals.
Pedals were a good idea. With pedals, people could ride
instead of walk or push their velocipedes. But velocipedes
were hard to ride on cobblestone streets, and so they were
called “boneshakers.”
High Wheeler
Later, people rode a new kind of bicycle called a “high
wheeler.” It was made of metal and had a high front wheel
and solid rubber tires. It was more comfortable than a
boneshaker, but people could fall off easily. Women didn’t ride
high wheelers because women at the time wore long skirts.
They rode a machine with three wheels, called a tricycle.
Tricycle
The next bicycle went back to two wheels of the same size.
It had metal parts and pneumatic tires, and was called the
“safety bicycle.” This design became the standard for modern
bicycles. Then companies began to make bicycles for children.
Now everyone enjoys bicycles!

School in the Old Days

Long ago, school was different from the way it is now. Many
towns had one-room schoolhouses, and all students went to
the same one room. There was just one teacher, who taught
all students of different ages. All the students in my class are
nine or ten years old. Students sat on hard wooden benches in
rows. My class has comfortable desks, one for each student.
They copied the alphabet, numbers, and poems onto slates
with chalk. They also practiced their handwriting every day.
They used quill pens and ink to write neatly. I use a computer
to write. They copied texts and memorized long paragraphs
from the one or two books the teacher had. I don’t like to
memorize things from books. When students didn’t do their
work, the teacher used branches from trees to punish them.
My teacher is kind, so she doesn’t use branches. Some
teachers made bad students stand in a corner and wear a
pointed hat called a dunce cap. Students felt ashamed, and
they looked silly, too. School is very different now.

Paragraphs of Cause and Effect
In a paragraph of cause and effect, you explain what happens and
why. You use words like because, that’s why, and that’s because to
show cause and effect.

17 Read. Read the paragraph of cause and effect. How does

the writer explain what happens and the reasons why?
Circle the words and expressions.

Ice Cream Headaches

Do you ever get a headache when you eat ice cream?
Many people do. Why? Because your body doesn’t like
the cold temperature of the ice cream! Here’s what
happens. The ice cream is very cold. When the ice
cream touches the roof of your mouth, the nerve center
doesn’t like the cold. It sends a message to your brain.
Then the brain sends a message to your blood vessels,
and they get big very quickly. That’s because they are
trying to keep your head warm.
So that’s why you get ice cream headaches! But they
aren’t serious, so don’t worry! They are easy to prevent,
too. Just keep cold food and drink away from the roof
of your mouth! You should eat cold food slowly, and put
the ice cream in the front of your mouth first.

18 Write. Choose another common health problem. Write

what happens and why. Use words and expressions to
explain the reasons.

19 Work in a group. Share your writing. Listen and take notes.

Amazing Acrobats
Many acts we see in circuses today have roots
in ancient societies. Jugglers and acrobats were
popular in ancient Egypt and China. Today,
Chinese circuses are more popular, more colorful,
and more exciting than ever.
Most Chinese acrobats join the circus when
they are six years old, but they can spend ten
years practicing just one of these acts!
a. Juggling: Acrobats use their feet to juggle
things. They juggle tables, chairs, umbrellas,
plates, and even people!
b. Cycling: In this act, acrobats use “monocycles” (bicycles with one
wheel). The most famous act is the “bird.”
c. T
ight-wire: This act is about 2,000 years old. Brave acrobats walk,
cycle, or jump on a wire that is high in the air.
11646_L2U1_02M.pdf 1 6/25/12 10:11 AM

d. Pole-climbing: This act is about 1,000 years old. Athletes climb up

poles, jump from one pole to the other, and balance on the poles.
e. P
late-spinning: The acrobat holds a pole with a plate on it. The
plates spin fast. The acrobat dances, jumps, or stands on one arm.
Don’t miss Chinese acrobats. They’re the best!

Reviews
When you write a review, you tell the reader about the story and give
your opinions. Use words like in my opinion, I think, and I believe. Use
descriptive words like interesting, exciting, and boring. When you give
your opinions, you can give a reason, too.

18 Read. Read the book review. How does the writer express
her opinion? Underline the words and expressions.

Last weekend I went to the library with my dad, and

I found a wonderful book by Jacqueline Wilson. It’s called
“Cliffhanger.” I always look for her books. In my opinion,
she is one of the best writers in the world.
“Cliffhanger” is about a boy called Tim. He likes TV
shows and puzzles. He’s very smart, too, and he’s the
best student in most school subjects. But he’s the worst
student at sports! So when his parents send him to a
sports camp, he has a bad time.
Every day at camp Tim has to play sports, and he never gets
better. He hates sports. But one day he has a smart idea on how to
win the game. After that, he helps his team win, and he’s the most
popular person at camp. Then he doesn’t want to leave!
I loved this book. Jacqueline Wilson helps us remember some
important things. First, we’re all different. Second, you shouldn’t feel
bad if you’re not handsome because everyone is talented in some
way. Finally, sometimes you are not popular. But you have to try!

19 Write. Write about something you liked, for example, a

book you read or a movie you watched. Tell the story and
say why you liked it.

Cool Families
Imagine you live with the same relatives all your life,
from the day you are born until the day you die! You
are always with your mom, your sisters, and your
maternal aunts (mom’s sisters). You also spend time
with your paternal aunts. You clean them and
rest next to them. You don’t leave them to go to
school, and they don’t leave you. Not for one
minute! This is how the females in baboon
families live.
For orcas, there is a very special
relationship between mothers and sons.
Orca daughters often go to live with a new
family. Orca sons, however, usually stay with
their mom their whole life. The moms look
after their sons very well and protect them.
Sometimes, the sons live with another female,
for example, an aunt, instead of mom.
Young meerkats play games every day while
their parents look for food (like tasty insects).
Their brothers and sisters are the babysitters. When
meerkats turn one month old, they don’t have a
party or balloons. Instead, they go out for the first time
and learn to hunt. When they are four months old, they can
already find their own food! Bye-bye, mom and dad!

When meerkats get angry, they

Celebration Time!
People around the world pick, or harvest, food that
grows. Then they have a holiday. Let’s read about some
harvest celebrations! A.
1. Every February, the people of Mendoza, Argentina,
harvest their grapes. Then they celebrate for a month!
There are parades, shows, and fireworks. They always
choose a Harvest Queen, too.
2. Chanthaburi, a town in Thailand, is famous for its tasty
fruit. People celebrate the fruit at harvest time in May.
The Fruit Fair begins with a parade of floats made
from thousands of fruits and vegetables.
3. The people of Swaziland in Africa celebrate harvest
every December or January. Before the Incwala B.
festival can begin, the king must eat the first fruit.
After that, everyone else eats.
4. France’s famous Menton Lemon festival starts in
February. There are big parades with floats decorated
with lemons and oranges. More than 200,000 people
from around the world come to Menton for this

15 Read. Circle the correct words.

Video games / Electric lights are very important. If we have them in our
home, then we can see at night. Having electricity also means we can use
refrigerators, computers, TVs, and other modern / old-fashioned things that
make life / towns easier. Microwaves and dishwashers, for example, help us do
chores / fires such as cooking meals and washing dishes. Did you know that
1.4 billion people in the world don’t have electric lights? Life is more
modern / difficult for them. To get hot water, they have to make a
fire / chore. If they don’t live in a life / town or city, then there might not be
a hospital or a bank near them. However, life / things are easier for them if they
have a cell phone.

16 Work in a group. Discuss the questions.

1. Which are more important, electric lights or cell phones? Why?
2. Why is life easier if you have modern things such as microwaves
and dishwashers?
3. What do people without electric lights do when it is dark?
4. Why is life more difficult if you don’t live in a town or city?

High and Dry

A stilt house is a home on “legs.” Families usually put their animals or crops
under the house and live upstairs. They live high up so that if it rains, the water
can’t enter the rooms. Also, snakes and spiders can’t climb the stilts and visit
the family at night! Finally, it is often cooler upstairs. Stilt houses are high,
safe, and dry.
Today you can find stilt houses in South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
However, they are not all the same. In some Vietnamese stilt houses, for example,
the left side of the house is for the women; the men’s rooms are on the right.
Houses often have two staircases, too. In Thailand, the houses are often built
on water and face the mountains. They have bigger doors than Vietnamese
stilt houses.
Modern stilt houses look the same as they did long ago, but they are very
different inside! Today most modern stilt houses have electric lights, for example.
They have fridges, TVs, and computers. And of course, most people who live there
have cell phones!

Of Bumps
and Bruises
Ouch! You bruised yourself again!
A few minutes later you have a big
red bump. How does this happen?
When we bruise ourselves, we
break a small blood vessel, called a
capillary. Blood leaves the capillary,
but where can it go? It can’t come
out of your skin because you didn’t cut
yourself. So it fills the tissues under the
skin. As more blood travels to the place,
the bump gets bigger and redder.
Most bruises disappear after two weeks. But
they often change color first! After two days, your bruise
turns blue or purple. By day six, it’s green. And by day eight or nine, it looks
yellow to light brown.
Did you know that cold blood moves more slowly than warm blood? Next
time you get a bruise yourself, make it cold! Put a cold wet towel, or a pack
of frozen vegetables, on the bruise for half an hour. That way, less blood
travels to it. And you will get better sooner!

Happy Birthday!
Do you have a favorite party game that you like to
play on your birthday? In Mexico and other Latin American
countries, children often celebrate their birthdays with a piñata.
First, the children form a circle and sing a funny song, which makes them laugh.
Then, children take turns to stand in the middle with their eyes covered. Sometimes
their friends turn them round and round so that they are dizzy! The child in the
middle has to use a stick to hit the piñata. Suddenly there is a loud CRASH! The
piñata breaks, and lots of candy falls on the floor. The children stop singing and run
to pick up the candy. It’s a wonderful party game.
Piñatas come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. Piñateros, the
people who make piñatas, say that the most popular shapes are
characters from TV shows and movies. Birthday boys and girls also like
action figures, animals, guitars, race cars, princesses, and pop stars. To
make these shapes, piñateros use balloons, cardboard, and wire. One
piñata can take days, or even weeks, to make. Next, piñateros decorate
the outside with pretty colors. Families then put candy, fruit, and small
toys inside the piñata. Piñatas come in every color under the sun. And
they’re great fun! Happy Birthday, everyone!
One of the largest piñatas
in the world was a donkey.

27 Read the book review on page 84 of your Student Book. How did
the writer plan her writing? Read the steps.
1. First, the writer chose a book to review: Cliffhanger.
2. Next, the writer wrote down a list of subtopics, or related topics
she could write about. She used a word map.

3. Next, she wrote down a list of things she could give her opinion
about. Look at the text. Circle the things she gave her opinion about.
1. the place where she found the book
2. the writer
3. the story (plot)
4. the people in the story (characters)
5. the language that the writer uses (style)
4. Then, she organized the paragraphs. Read her paragraph and number
the order (1-4).
a. Summary of the story (part 1)
b. Name of the book and writer
c. Opinion
d. Summary of the story (part 2)
5. Finally, she wrote her first version, called a draft, of her paragraph.
She used lots of descriptive words, like: interesting, boring, exciting,
funny, and awesome. She also used expressions like: in my opinion,
I think, and I believe.

28 Follow steps 1-5 on page 64. Plan your book or movie review.
Then write it in your notebook.

29 Express yourself. We can review other things, too. For example,

we can review the city where we live, a restaurant, a video game,
a movie, or a TV program. Choose something that you would like
to review. End with your opinion. Plan your writing and follow the
steps on page 64. Write your new paragraph in your notebook.

30 Check your work. Answer these questions. Then make any

important changes.
• Did I include lots of descriptive words?
• Did I give my opinion on a variety of subjects (e.g., plot,
characters, style)?
• When I gave my opinion, did I give a reason?
