My Mom, the Airplane

There are not many whooping cranes in the world. People
have to protect these birds and help them live safely. There are
some special places in North America where people protect the
whooping crane’s eggs. They then take care of the baby cranes.
These cranes have no mothers to follow, so they follow a
scientist who wears a crane suit and they walk with a small
airplane. They listen to the airplane, too. Soon they are happy
to fly with the airplanes—they think the airplane is their mother!
Before the weather gets cold, cranes have to fly to warm
places. They don’t have a mother to teach them where to
go. So they follow an airplane. Some journeys are more than
70 days!
And in the spring, when the weather is warm again,
they fly back on their own! These birds can then teach a All birds come

see the elephants. They are called Archie and Tina. He usually gives
the elephants a bath first! He uses a lot of water. After that he feeds

he walks with the elephants and helps them
to exercise.
He loves his new job. I want to visit him

Eye in the Sky

Satellites are machines in space that circle Earth. They help
us talk to people on the other side of the planet. They can also
study the planet’s weather. This satellite is called GeoEye 1. It is 681 km
the same size as a big car. It takes photos of our planet. These (423 miles)
pictures can show our continents and oceans. They can show
our streets and houses, too!
On the Internet there are many photos and maps of Earth.
We can use these images to help us to explore our world.

This is a photo of the world. You

can see the seven continents.
Do you know their names?

This is part of Asia, the biggest continent.

Now we can see the countries clearly. Now we can see one town.
Here we can see South Korea. This is Pohang in South
Korea. Look! Can you see
the sports stadium!?

Hot Air Balloons

It’s always exciting to see a colorful hot air balloon
in the sky—but here there are hundreds! In October
every year, there is an International Balloon Fiesta in
Albuquerque, USA. About 600 balloons are up in the
sky at the same time. And many of these are shaped
like animals, fish, and even spaceships!
How do hot air balloons fly? When the balloon
is on the ground, people light gas to make a small
fire. This heats the air in the balloon. Hot air
always goes up. So, the balloon goes up slowly into
the air. The pilot stands in the basket and lights the
gas to go higher. The wind blows the balloon along.
Usually there is a group of people on the ground
called the “chase team.” They are in a truck, and they
follow the balloon. They use a radio to talk to the pilot.
The pilot looks for a safe place to land the balloon and tells the
chase team where to go. Then, the chase team takes the balloon
and the pilot back home!

can catch a bus every 90 seconds. Many buses are typical size,

Amazing Animal Senses

Many animals can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch—
but they do it in a different way from humans.
Imagine you have to walk on your dinner to taste it!
Well, a butterfly does—it tastes with its feet!
People use the ends of their fingers to touch. Seals use
their whiskers. Their sense of touch is amazing. They can
feel fish through the water 180 meters (590 feet) away. whisker

Spiders don’t have ears. They hear using hundreds of

small hairs on their legs.
We can smell delicious food in front of a restaurant.
But we can’t smell food that is in a different town! Bears
have a fantastic sense of smell. They can smell things
that are 32 kilometers (20 miles) away.
Chameleons can see very well—look at their eyes! One
red-tailed
eye looks up, and the other eye looks down. They can hawk

The Daily Lives of Animals

What do you do every day? Most kids wake up in
the morning, eat three or four meals a day, help their
families, and go to sleep at night. Many animals
don’t live the same way kids do. They sleep in the
daytime or eat only at night. Some animals never Red-necked
sleep! They take care of babies in different ways. nightjar
The red-necked nightjar is a bird from Spain
and northern Africa. It flies in the evening and eats
insects. It sleeps on the ground during the day. Most
birds lay eggs in a nest, but this bird lays eggs on
the ground!
The koala lives in Australia. It only eats eucalyptus
tree leaves at night. The koala sleeps in the morning,
afternoon, and evening. It sleeps more than fifteen
hours a day! It has a small baby that grows in its
mother’s pouch.
The great white shark lives in oceans all over the Koala pouch
world. The great white shark never stops swimming.
It always eats and never sleeps. The mother doesn’t
take care of its babies. The babies swim away from
their hungry mother!

Many things smell good. Apple trees,
flowers, and the ocean all smell great. But
some animals and plants smell terrible!
The Eastern snake-necked turtle lives in
freshwater in eastern Australia. This turtle
has a really long neck that looks like a
snake. If you catch an Eastern snake-necked
turtle, it smells terrible. Some people think
it smells like a skunk. In Australia, people
call this turtle the “stinker”!
Many flowers smell good, but the
rafflesia doesn’t. It smells terrible! The
rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world.
