Internal Parts of Computer

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Motherboard

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer. It contain the CPU, ROM,
RAM, expansion slots, PCI slots. The motherboard makes everything in your computer work
together. It is the biggest part inside the system unit or computer chassis. It allow
communication between the CPU, RAM and other computer hardware components.
Power Supply Unit

Also called as power supply or PSU. This device supplies power to your personal
computer. The power supply then pulls the required amount of electricity and converts the AC
current to DC current and it regulates the voltage to eliminate spikes and surges common in
most electrical systems.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Also known as hard drive. This is the computer's main storage device used to store all
data on the computer permanently. Commonly, hard drives are place in an internal drive bay
at the front of the system case and are connected with either ATA, SCSI, or a SATA cable and
power cable.
Random Access Memory (RAM)

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a piece of hardware that allows stored data to be
accessed randomly. Its main function is to store the data temporarily.

Central Processing Unit

Central Processing Unit or CPU, is the brain of the computer and one of the most
important chip on the motherboard. New CPUs are small and square and contain multiple
metallic connectors or pins on the underside. The CPU is inserted directly into a CPU socket,
pin side down, on the motherboard.
CPU Fan and Heatsink

A fan is a hardware device that keeps the overall computer or a computer device cool
by circulating air to or from the computer or component.

A heat sink is a device that incorporates either a fan or some other means to keep a
hot component, such as a processor, cooled down. There are two heat sink types: active and
passive.

Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE)

Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) is a standard electronic interface used between a

computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's disk storage devices. The
IDE interface is based on the IBM PC Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) 16-bit bus
standard, but it is also used in computers that use other bus standards. IDE was adopted as a
standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in November 1990.

S-ATA

A data cable is used to connect S-ATA type Hard

Disk Drive to motherboard. Stands for "Serial
Advanced Technology Attachment," or "Serial
ATA." It is an interface used to connect ATA hard
drives to a computer's motherboard. SATA transfer
rates start at 150MBps, which is significantly faster
than even the fastest 100MBps ATA/100 drives.
For this and other reasons, Serial ATA is likely to
replace the previous standard, Parallel ATA
(PATA), which has been around since the 1980s.
Video Card

It is commonly known as graphics accelerator card, display adapter, or graphics card.

This is a hardware component whose main function is to generate and display the output images
to a computer monitor.

Network Interface Card (NIC)

is used to connect computers to a computer network.

Sound Card
is also called as audio card adapter. This is a computer expansion card used for the input
and output of audio signals from a computer using a specific computer programs. New
motherboard comes with built in audio adapter
Optical Disc Drive

An optical drive refers to a computer system that allows users to use DVDs, CDs and
Blue –ray optical drivers.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
Identify the internal parts of computer

ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1
Directions: TRUE OR FALSE.Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is
not.
1. The PSU converts AC to DC current.

2. The motherboard contain the CPU, RAM and HDD.

3. The Hard drive temporarily stores data.

4. The CPU is inserted on the motherboard.

5. Sound card is also known as audio card adapter.

ACTIVITY 2

Directions: IDENTIFICATION. Identify the type of server described in the following

sentences.

1. This is a computer expansion card used for the input and output of audio

signals from a computer using a specific computer programs.

2. It allow users to use DVDs, CDs and Blue –ray optical drivers.

3. It is used to generate and display the output images to a computer monitor.

4. It is used to connect motherboard and computer disk storage device.

5. It is the main brain of the computer.

REFLECTION
Select a part of the computer? If you are that part, how can you relate that part in your
life as a person?
