Fe Primitiva Del Mundo

A filipina pediatrician, she was born on November 27, 1911 in Intramuros Manila.She was
the sixth of 8 children of Mr. Bernardo Del Mundo Villanueva. But her 3 siblings died in sickness,
reason why she pushed her dreams to become a doctor.

She graduated as a valedictorian in University of the Philippines (UP) college of medicine,


after she graduated in UP president Manuel Quezon gave her a scholarship in the US and she
applied to Harvard Medical School in 1936. In 1940 she arrived in Boston to continue her
masteral degree.

Fe V. Del Mundo is also an author and humanitarian.She founded the first pediatric hospital
in the Philippines and is known for shaping the modern child health care system in our country.
Her pioneering work in pediatrics in the Philippines while active medical practice spanned 8
decades.

Fe Del Mundo established her own hospital , Children Medical Center located in Quezon
City in 1951. She also joined the International Red Cross and volunteered to care for children
internes in University of Santo Tomas and became known as “The Angel of Santo Tomas”, she
also received many awards and achievements like she was the first female president of the
Philippines Pediatric Society and the first women to be named “National Scientist of the
Philippines in 1980.

Fe Del Mundo invented the bamboo incubator in 1941 in rural communities without
electricity, she invented this incubator and it is composed of two native baskets made in
bamboo.

Fe Primitiva Villianueva Del Mundo died in August 2011 by cardiac arrest. Her
accomplishments are still remembered. The hospital she founded is still open and now bears
her name “The Fe Del Mundo medical Center”.
