QUESTION 1

A magnetic core in the form of a closed circular ring has a mean length of 30 cm and a cross-
sectional area of 1 cm2. The relative permeability of iron is 2400.

a) What direct-current will be needed in the coil of 2000 turns uniformly wound around
the ring to create a flux of 0.20 mWb in iron? (10)
b) If an air-gap of 1 mm is cut through the core perpendicular to the direction of the flux,
what current will now be needed to main the same flux in the air gap? (10)

QUESTION 2

Two air-cored coils are disposed relatively to each other so that 60% of the flux in one coil
links all the turns of the other coil. Each coil has a mean diameter of 2cm and a length of 50
cm. If there are 2000 turns of wire on one coil, calculate the number of turns required on the
other coil to give a mutual inductance of 20 mH (15)

QUESTION 3

Two identical 900 turn coils A and B lie in parallel plane. A current changing at the rate of
2500 A/s in A induces an emf of 20 V in B.
(a) Calculate coefficient of coupling between the two coils (10)

(b) If the inductance of each coil is 25mH, calculate the flux produced in coil A per ampere.
