QUESTION 1

A coil of 800 turns is uniformly wound around an iron ring of diameter 40

cm. The diameter of the iron is 2.0 cm. A second winding with 0.5mm
diameter is wound over the first one. If the mutual inductance between the
two windings is 0.28 H, calculate the number of turns of the second winding.
(Assume relative permeability of iron, 𝜇𝑟 = 800 and permeability of air is
4𝜋x10-7 )

• SOLUTION
• 𝜇𝑟 = 800; 𝜇0 = 4𝜋x10-7
• 𝑙 =0.4𝜋 i. e. circumference of the ring = 1.257 m
0.02 2
• A=𝜋( ) = 0.000314

QUESTION 2
Two coils, Coil 1 of 13000 turns and Coil 2 of 17000 turns, lie in parallel
planes so that 75% of flux produced in coil 1 links coil 2. It is found that
a current of 6 A in coil 1 produces a flux of 0.8 mWb while the same
current in coil 2 produces 1.0 mWb. Find the following

• (i) Coefficient of self-induction due to coil 1

• (ii) Coefficient of self-induction due to coil 2
• (iii) Coefficient of coupling of the two coils
• Solution
