Q #1 (50 pts) Basic Machine Design

A stator is wound with two coils in series as shown, each coil consisting of 500 turns.
The rotor is similarly wound with two coils in series, each coil consisting of 50 turns.
Stator current = 1.6 A
Rotor current = 5 A
Rotor length = 0.1 m
Rotor radius = 0.05 m
Air gap = 1 mm
[assume infinite rotor and stator permeability]

Note: Exactly two rotor slots are in the stator magnetic field at any given time while the
other two rotor slots are in regions of zero flux.

Q #2 (50 pts) DC Machines

The results of tests on a DC motor are given below.

Test # Va (volts)  (r/s) Tem (N m)

1 100 212.5 2
2 50 125 0

a) Calculate kE, kT, and Ra.

When 60 volts is applied to the motor at rest with no load attached, it initially accelerates
at a rate of 40 r/s2.

b) Calculate JM.

Solution:

a)

We can determine kE from test #2.

𝑒𝑎 50 𝑉
𝑘𝐸 = = = 0.4 , 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜, 𝑘𝑇 = 𝑘𝐸
𝜔 125 𝑟
𝑠

Knowing kE and kT, we can determine Ra from test #1.

𝑟
𝑉𝑅 𝑉𝑎 − 𝑘𝐸 𝜔 100 𝑉 – 0.4 (212.5 𝑠)
𝑅𝑎 = = = =3𝛺
𝑖𝑎 𝑇𝑒𝑚 2 𝑁𝑚
𝑘𝑇 0.4

b)

At t = 0:
𝑉𝑎 − 𝑒𝑎 60 𝑉 − 0 𝑉
𝑇𝑒𝑚 (0) = 𝑘𝑇 = 0.4 = 8 𝑁𝑚
𝑅𝑎 3𝛺
Note: ea(t=0) = 0

8 𝑁𝑚
𝑇𝐽 = 𝑇𝑒𝑚 = 𝐽 𝜔′ , → 𝐽= 𝑟 = 0.2 𝑘𝑔 𝑚
