Topic 3. Empathy and Culture

Date: 09-02-2022

The movie that I choose to talk about is “Remember the Titans”, a film from 2000 that was
produced by Disney. The story of the film is that in 1971 a couple of high schools in
Virginia did merge into 1, but at this time schools were separated by races, black people,
and white people. This type of merge that suffer the high school was one of their kind and
obvious tension between races will start to happen mainly because white persons saw as
animals the black people. The main plot starts when the high school decides to change the
head coach of the football team, and places a black person on this position, after this black
people and white people will start on a training camp and here their journey will begin to
get along, I will like to describe some of the scenes where the empathy is well shown.

 The Gettysburg National Cemetery speech: Coach Boones wakes up all the team
at 3 AM and orders to follow him on a morning jog. Couple of hours after, they get
to the cemetery of Gettysburg, in there he stops and starts talking about how the
hatred was the main reason that the persons that fought this battle killed and
destroyed each other and if the team does not come together they will get
destroyed too, he also made emphasis on even if they don’t like each other, they
should respect each other in order to play as a team. On this scene we can see that
the cognitive empathy, mainly because Coach Boones encourages their students to
have respect between teammates, and this can only be achieved if you have an
idea of the beliefs and feelings of the other persons.

 The Brick Incident at Coach Boones House: Coach Boones invites Coach Bill’s
daughter to spend some time with her daughter, at some point on the night they
throw a brick at the Coach Boones House scaring everybody at the coach’s house.
The day after Coach Bill confronts Coach Boones to stop antagonizing the persons
that throw the brick at this house and to stop acting to reckless because it can put
in danger the life of her daughter too, at this point coach Boones answer that he
does apologize for the scene that her daughter live but that it is not his fault that
this hatred has gone this far, and maybe know he can understand a little bit what
her babies suffer too. In this scene we can clearly identify Emotional Empathy,
mainly because both characters can understand the feeling of having their children
in danger for the hatred of other persons that does not agree with their beliefs.
