A. Guide Questions for the story,” Children of the City” by Amadis Ma. Guerrero. (9 pts)

1. Give at least 3 factors that greatly affected Victor’s life.

First, when Victor’s father was shot during a strike. Upon discovering the bad news, Victor was cowered
in shadows and her mother cried in anger, fury and frustration. Second, sooner her mother found a new
father for her son but Victor disapproved of him. Then one morning, Victor woke up with his mother
gone with the man she was going with. Third, due to the absence of his mother, his mother’s older
brother, Tio Pedring, recommended Victor to work for him as newspaper boy. Victor didn’t hesitate and
took the job leading him to become as one of the “Children of the City”.

2. How does the author illustrate the Dirty American image? Is it fair?

The author illustrates the American as inhumane and bias. Yes, because many Filipinos suffered
from their greediness and unfair treatment and the compensation.

3. Trace the growth of Victor from the son to the street child.

He is the epitome of a child- young, naïve, and innocent about how the world truly works. After his
father dies, his life went in a downward spiral. His mother abandoned him for another man, and he was
taken to his Uncle, Tio Pedring, to work as a newsboy. There, he learned how the world truly worked. In
the end, no matter how hard he tried to find hope and joy, he succumbed to the cruelness of the world
and gave into vices in the end. I consider him as a dynamic character due to the fact that he experienced
change throughout the whole story- from an innocent boy to a scarred individual who had no choice but
to change in order to survive the perilous streets of Manila.

Death to return the soul of her husband. She uses her determination and her wit to outsmart Yama. And
the God obviously sees Savitri as more than just a wife.

C. Guide Questions for “The Analects” by Confucius. (9pts)

1. Which Confucian philosophy would you like to practice? Why?

As a young student I would like to practice more the Confucius' social philosophy where in it is based
primarily on the principle of "ren" means "loving others" while exercising self-discipline.

2. Which philosophy have you been practicing without knowing it is Confucian? Explain.

“love within the family, love of parents for their children, and love of children for their parents” The idea
of “filial piety,” or devotion to family. The family was the most important group for Confucian ethics, and
devotion to family could only strengthen the society surrounding it.

3. Which of the aforecited sayings, do you think, is sorely needed today? Why?

“He who requires much from himself and little from others will keep from being the object of
resentment.” I think this one is self-explanatory, but it’s important to really look hard at what we’re
expecting of other people and ask ourselves if it’s too much for them. We may think of it as nothing, but
they may feel very differently. If we care about them, or just want to avoid needless conflicts, this is
something to consider.

D. Guide Question for “The Rubaiyat” by Omar Khayam. (3pts)

1. Give your impression of The Rubaiyat in 3 – 5 sentences.

Despite hearing this poem for the first time, I was really impressed that it has a deep and
meaningful message that everyone should be reminded of. I can feel my connection especially when I
realized its meaning. The more I understand the message it was trying to impart to the readers. It
reminds us not to forget enjoying life, which I definitely agree with. It reminds us to enjoy life so that we
will have no regrets in the future.
