1.1. In your own words, how would the concepts of the self from the 3 philosophers
explain the creation of one of your signature strengths?

Philosopher Signature Strength:Curiosity

Rene Descartes Thinking of various situation and willingness to risk the experiment of
finding whether the truth they seek lies there

David Hume Every Time i see something that intrigues me, questions keep
pooping in my head although I do not have the courage sometimes to
ask those questions.

Immanuel Kant “All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the
understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than
reason”. Being curious has been part of me since i was a kid, when i
keep seeing things that intrigue i keep questioning and then
understanding the thing and giving me answers of my curiosities and
reasons why.

1.2. Using the lens of sociology, how did you become your signature strengths?

Ever since i was a kid i was wondering why am i like this keep questioning the
desire of knowing and learning things, the desire of knowing/learning uncertain or
complex situations.

2.1. Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of
thinking about herself? Why do you think so?

The best philosopher that would explain the legend Cathy Garcia-Molina’s way of
thinking herself is the philosophy of Hume. Director Cathy didn’t expect on
becoming a director as Hume’s say "Causes and effects are discoverable not by
reason, but by experience" He goes on to say that, even with the perspective of
the past, humanity cannot dictate future events because thoughts of the past are
limited, compared to the possibilities for the future.

2.2. Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s
becoming a film director? Why do you think so?
Using the lens of sociology, the most influence in Molina’s becoming a film
director is the people who watch the film/movies and to those people who direct
Cathy cheered up, because of those people direct Cathy didn't gave up on
becoming a director.

1.1. In your own words, how would the concepts of the self from the 3 philosophers
explain the creation of one of your signature strengths?

Philosopher Signature Strength: Humor

Rene Descartes I think of various situations and circumstances I find myself in, and
use my knowledge to come up with a quip or joke to make.

David Hume Whenever I see/experience things that I find funny, I tend to make a
humorous comment on them, which developed my ability to find
humor in my daily experiences.

Immanuel Kant The things I encountered throughout my life made me develop a

sense of humor and made me take things in a relatively laid-back and
lighthearted way.

1.2. Using the lens of sociology, how did you become your signature strengths?

Over the course of my life, I have always had issues with my mental
health, and I looked for ways to support myself and make myself better. I found
friends and others with the same issues I face, and they usually made jokes
about their situations to cope. With time, I came to adopt this coping mechanism
and now, I also make an effort to think of things in a more light-hearted way.

2.1. Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of
thinking about herself? Why do you think so?
I think the philosophy of the self that would best explain how she thinks of
herself is the philosophy of Kant, because she talks about the parts of the
different stages of her life and how all of these experiences coalesced and
defined her as the person she is today, much like how Kant described the self as
a thing that “unifies” and turns different thoughts and sensations into one whole.

2.2. Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s
becoming a film director? Why do you think so?

In my view, the one who had the most influence on how Molina created
and developed her craft and became who she is today as a film director was her
instructor, Direk Marilou. Throughout the interview, she expressed how she was
not even sure of her choice to pursue film until then, quoted many things her
instructor had said and kept them in mind for the films she directed.

1.1. In your own words, how would the concepts of the self from the 3 philosophers
explain the creation of one of your signature strengths?

Philosopher Signature Strength:____Honesty_______

Rene Descartes In encountering situations, I make sure as much as possible to be

analytical and critical to give my honest opinion or thoughts. With this,
people tend to hear opinions that are not sugar coated or wired to
only fit what they want to hear. This keeps the people more aware
and educated.

David Hume Honesty became my signature strength because of my own

experiences as well as observing how people react to it. I want what
is best for myself and to not be ignorant about what is happening
around me.

Immanuel Kant I am also not entirely sure how far my honesty in life would go.
Afterall, in some situations, it is not the instinctual aspect of any
human being. The consistency of honesty cannot be really explained
since in some times, it is not the option chosen by people.

1.2. Using the lens of sociology, how did you become your signature strengths?

I have always used the quote “Do unto others what you want others do unto you”
by the philosopher Confucius to guide me in my actions in my daily life. It is a fact
that there are times when it is inevitable to act out what we really want to do at
that certain moment, However, we must also consider how our actions would be
perceived by the others and by the society as a whole. I believe that because of
this mindset that honesty became one of my signature strengths. I want others to
be honest with me because I never liked being unaware.

2.1. Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of
thinking about herself? Why do you think so?

Cathy Garcia-Molina believes that going beyond your capabilities is your way of
proving yourself, and not to anyone. She was not enthusiastic at all about her
early-life experiences. However, this changed when she started to discover
things for herself. She stated that she is the one who will run her life and decide
for herself. I believe that Rene Descartes’ philosophy of “The self is a thinking
thing” best describes Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of thinking about herself.

Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s
becoming a film director? Why do you think so?

Cathay Garcia-Molina mentioned at first that she was not really interested in the
major she was taking until she met Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya, her instructor in
film directing at that time. There, she started to love what she was doing. I think
the exposure Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya gave her a push to become interested
in her major.

1.1. In your own words, how would the concepts of the self from the 3 philosophers
explain the creation of one of your signature strengths?

Philosopher Signature Strength:Judgment_________

Rene Descartes Judgment, From the word judge, the mind is exercising its ability to
think and recognize the facts by comparing every fact that are laid out
before deciding on the opinion of a single matter, this signature
strength challenges the mind in analyzing each fact that are given to
the mind and the mind add its own experience and reasoning in
determining the decision. The entire act of just making a judgment
allows the mind to explore on the concept of analyzation and it
reaffirms your self-existence i due to the ability to think with our
minds.

David Hume Judgment as a signature strength cannot be experienced by the ‘self’

due the ‘self’ is just a concept or meaningless term, judgment cannot
be experienced cause the experience of the act of judgment from
others is not possible to be understood or experienced.

Immanuel Kant
The homo noumenon (mental self) is the foremost in charge in
formulating thoughts, it controls the process of judgment and its
decision and the action to be taken from that decision. The homo
phenomenon (objective self) is the one acting out our decision that is
relayed from our judgment from the homo noumenon onto our
objective self. Both of these would then align with each other to
project the experience of judgment or doing judgment to the person.

1.2. Using the lens of sociology, how did you become your signature strengths?

My life is always full of uncertainty, I always have this problem of seeking a sense of
validation either from people around me like friends, family etc. however, as time goes on, I
learned that it can be a signature strength from relating the same situation from my friends and
family and that it’s normal to be uncertain in life and that answers will appear in due time or
through searching for it and so in situations in which a decision has to be made in either an
argument or question I started to look at both sides of an argument and I would start asking for
more information regarding the topic through friends, family and etc.

2.1. Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of
thinking about herself? Why do you think so?

The philosophy of the self that describes Cathy Garcia-Molina would be that of Rene
Descartes. It is because she forge herself to the woman she is today through the grueling task
of finding herself through staying true to her beliefs, mindset and personality and paving her
own way to be a successful director.

2.2. Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s
becoming a film director? Why do you think so?

The person that influenced Cathy Garcia-Molina to become a director would be her late
instructor Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya. It is because Director Marilou DIaz-Abaya has taught
Cathy Garcia-Molina the process of filming, the elements of it and the value of a scene with just
a word and that sparked Cathy Garcia-Molina’s interest in Film Directing and became the
director that she is today.

1.1. In your own words, how would the concepts of the self from the 3 philosophers
explain the creation of one of your signature strengths?

Philosopher Signature Strength: Spirituality

Rene Descartes On events I gain significant experiences, I tend to reflect on and judge
what they signify to me and my connection to them. I would make
every effort to link them together.

David Hume The experiences, sensations, and thoughts I perceive and face have
already been laid out for me like a red carpet that I only have to walk
through feeling them going in and out of my life. Because I believe
that the path I walk on is a path unique to me, weaved by something
greater than myself.

Immanuel Kant My life experiences lead to one end which is a mystery to me. I think
that life is synthesized by the good and the bad. And that it is
constructed by a narrative beyond the human mind’s comprehension.

1.2. Using the lens of sociology, how did you become your signature strengths?

I have always admired people who live their life by their own purpose and calm. I
have learned from specific sets of experiences and from individuals that what
matters most is my own definition of connectedness to certain events. I have
dealt with toxic relationships that took a toll on my emotional and mental
wellness. To recover, I developed the mentality that these experiences happen
for a reason.

2.1. Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of
thinking about herself? Why do you think so?

The philosophy that best explains Cathy Garcia-Molina’s way of thinking about
herself is the philosophy of Rene Descartes. Her own judgment, doubts, and
mindset had constructed a strong-willed, passionate, and thoughtful director. She
only finds her own identity during those times when she had to rationalize her
decisions and think through them.

2.2. Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s
becoming a film director? Why do you think so?

Using the lens of sociology, I think that Cooley’s “the looking glass self” can be
applied to the shaping of Director Cathy Garcia-Molina. She mentioned how she
had always relied on others in decision-making specifically on her siblings.
Alongside, it is worth noting that Cathy was able to build her own identity
because of how she perceived she was based on her father’s judgment—an
underachiever. That drove her to strive in life while building an image for herself
and for others.
SUMMARY OF GROUP TASK:

Which philosophy of the self would best explain Cathy Garcia-Molina’s ways of thinking about
herself? Why do you think so?

From our standpoint, Cathy Garcia-Molina's way of thinking resonates with all three
philosophical lenses. Note that in the philosophy of Descartes, "the self is a thinking thing." In
the latter years of adolescence, Cathy stated that she was going to run her life and decide for
herself. That statement plainly describes the self that Descartes' proposed. Alongside, her
judgment, doubts, and mindset had constructed a strong-willed, passionate, and thoughtful
director. Cathy forged herself to become the woman she is today through the grueling task of
finding her identity while staying true to her beliefs, mindset, and personality paving her way to
success. Also, the philosophy of Hume is featured in the life of the renowned director. As Hume
said, "causes and effects are discoverable not by reason, but by experience." He goes on to
say, "even with the perspective of the past, humanity cannot dictate future events because
thoughts of the past are limited, compared to the possibilities for the future." Similarly, because
of life's confrontations, Cathy went on to become a director which she did not expect. In closing,
the different stages of her life coalesced and defined her as the person she is today. Much like
how Kant described the self as a thing that “unifies” and turns different thoughts and sensations
into one whole.

Using the lens of sociology, who do you think has the most influence in Molina’s becoming a film
director? Why do you think so?

We deduce that the viewers, her family, and instructor, Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya,
contributed to her becoming a director. The cheer and support Cathy received from the people
strengthened her passion for directing when she was about to give up and move to New
Zealand. We must not forget her family as well who made major and significant decisions for her
during her youth. She mentioned how she had always relied on others in decision-making
specifically on her siblings. Alongside, it is worth noting that Cathy was able to build her own
identity because of how she perceived she was based on her father’s judgment—an
underachiever. That drove her to strive in life to build an image for herself. While persevering in
her studies, her instructor, Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya, ignited a passion within Cathy for
filming. There, she started to love what she was doing and valued each and every aspect of the
work.
