ACTIVITY MAPPING IN
AND AROUND PUNE

Why Kolad, Pune?

1. Pune is the headquarter of the west zone of India registered under I.M.F and Pune has
become an adventure hub because of its geological settings it has inclined adventure
activities towards it.
2. As mountaineering is mainly associated with climbing on rocky settings and Western
Ghats having high altitude Mountains and most favourable rocks for Climbing for
ex: granite, diorite, pegmatite, monzonite, and basalt. This rock type is equally
favourable to bouldering, as it is to sport climbing and top roping. In fact, these
igneous rocks have a higher degree of strength associated with anchor bolts.
3. Kolad has a favourable context which is required for a Mountaineering Institute,
Andharban forest for Search and Rescue Course, Steep Valleys for rappelling and
climbing activities, river rafting throughout the year in Kundalika river which is the
only river in India where river rafting takes place throughout the river, otherwise in
most of the places like in north Rishikesh it’s a seasonal activity.
4. Pune has 3 to 4 clubs registered under IMF in each club they have 100 to 150
members 50% of them are certified mountaineers and rest of them are not are not
certified because of reasons like lack of money time but they are well trained under
these clubs, having an institute would help them to get nation- and world-wide
recognition to their talent. (Clubs registered under IMF: Yashwanti Hikers Khopoli,
Shivdurg Rescue team Lonavala, Giripremi Pune)
5. Pune having all the defence camps, having an institute in Pune would help the defence
cadets to get training in the institute, instead of going to Himalayan region for
training.
SITE CHOICE

SITE LOCATION: Tamhini Ghat, Kolad (331366.00 m E, 2042106.00 m N),

Maharashtra.

Site is located on Tamhini Ghat and is in the

centre of two metropolitan cities. The site is
well connected by the Tamhini Ghat road to
the major public transport like bus stand,
railway station and the airport. And has all the
geographical context favourable for an
institute like Andharban forest for Search and
Rescue course, Devkund waterfall for
waterfall rappelling, steep valleys for
climbing and rappelling activities. Site
located on top of steep valley and location is
famous for plus valley.
ACTIVITY MAPPING AROUND SITE

• Andharban Forest – Search and Rescue course.

• Devkund Waterfall – Waterfall rappelling activity.
• Plus valley- Steep Slope for rock climbing and rappelling activities.
• Kundalika river – River rafting.

KEY CONSIDERATION FOR SITE SELECTION

• Favourable geological context for an institute for different activities.

• In proximity with the defence area.
• Location in the outskirts of the city and away from the hustle of traffic.
• Size of plot to accommodate program needs.
• Hilly area and away from city area
• Potential for future expansion (if desired).
• Well, connected by vehicular road to public transport.
• Availability of existing utilities (water, power telephone and cables).
ACCESS ROUTES TO SITE

The site is located on Tamhini ghat, Sahyadri range and Tamhini ghat road which is a two-
way road connects the site to Pune and Kolad cities and gives an ease of access to the public
transport. The site is placed along the secondary road which is single lane 4m wide road ends
at the Tata Power Plant, Dongarwadi. The site has slope of 32m.

Elevation: 2460 ft above sea level.

Geography: Formed entirely of basaltic rocks, Tamhini ghat is dominated by Deciduous,

Semi-evergreen and Evergreen types of forests.

Soil:

The site slopes to a steep valley and naturally drains rain runoff to the dam. Site is densely
covered with different types of trees with deep roots which holds the top soil and prevent it
from erosion.

CLIMATE DATA OF KOLAD, PUNE
Kolad has a varied climate; spring (March to
May) is hot and sultry, while the monsoon
season (June to September) is accompanied by
heavy rainfalls. Winters are during November
and February and are characterized by a medium
level of humidity and cool weather. The warmest
month (with the highest average high
temperature) is April (36.8°C). The month with
the lowest average high temperature
is August (26.3°C). The month with the highest
average low temperature is June (24.5°C). The
coldest month (with the lowest average low
temperature) is January (17.8°C). The wettest
month (with the highest rainfall)
is July (450mm). The driest month (with the least
rainfall) is January (0mm). Kolad
Tamhini Ghat is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Fauna: According to the forest department, the sanctuary is home to over 25 species of
mammals, including the giant squirrel (locally called shekru), leopard and barking deer; over
150 species of birds and over 70 species of butterflies. As per the study using line transect
and point count methods, from the year 2011 to 2013, the updated checklist of birds at the
Tamhini sanctuary now has 164 bird species. The present study reported 35 new specie
records in the area, while 15 bird species that were reported earlier were not observed during
the study.

Four restricted range of species were recorded at the sanctuary as Nilgiri wood pigeon
(Columba elphinstonii), Malabar grey hornbill (ocyceros griseus), white-bellied blue-
flycatcher (cyornis pallidipes) and crimson-backed sunbird (leptocoma minima).

Flora: The reserve’s natural vegetation is dominated mostly by Southern tropical Semi
Evergreen forests, followed by Deciduous and Evergreen Forest type. There are various types
of trees, plants, herbs, and shrubs found in this region. One can easily spot plants and trees
like Mango, Hirda, Bamboo, Jamun, Behda, and more, which dominate the plant species of
the area. If one ventures into the park during monsoons, they may also be able to spot various
species of mosses and epiphytes, including trees bearing bioluminescent fungi if they are
lucky!
SITE PLAN, SECTION, MODEL

a. Site with natural contours b. Site after cut and fill

Zoning of the site is done keeping in mind public, semi-public and private zone.
Public zone is kept at the entrance of the site such that the visitors’ activities
doesn’t disturb the flow of an institute. After that semi-public zone that is the
non-certified accomodation and outdoor training area is placed which creates
a buffer between public and private zone. After that institute building is placed
and then the private zone which is the accomodation is placed which gets the
best view of the site. It is placed at the steepest part of the site. Segregation of
pedestrian and vehicular movement is done by providing vehicular road along
the periphery of the site, central part is free from vehicular movement. The
structures are oriented along the slope of the contours without disturbing natural
slope of the site.

Section AA’

Section BB’

The site is slightly steep at the start and the end of the plot and the central
portion is much flatter, accordingly the zoning of the site is done. At the start of
the site auditorium and museum is placed as that part is slightly steep so the
contours are well used for the steps seating of the auditorium. In the central
portion outdoor activities and the main institute building is placed. As the site
has best view of the valley at the end of the site so the accomodation is zoned in
the slightly steep part of the site.
