II. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the last of three grammar courses taken by students of Licenciatura en Idioma
Inglés: Opción Enseñanza and Licenciatura en Lenguas Modernas: Especialidad en Francés
e Inglés. In this course, the grammatical structure of the English language as well as the
punctuation mechanics will be studied from three different perspectives: form, meaning,
and use. This grammar course aims at widening such a limited perspective to that of
discourse, where sentences are interlaced in written texts through cohesion and
coherence. The grammatical competence developed in the previous grammar and English
courses will be the initial raw material from which the students will depart.

Though the prescriptive method will be mainly used, there will also be a combination
of activities intended to enhance accuracy, meaning and use of the structures studied. To
promote an active participation of students that can lead to a better understanding of the
topics studied in class, a series of activities will be carried out.

It is expected to help students become aware of the usefulness of grammar so that

they can take advantage of what is learnt in this course to apply it in other subjects along
their course of studies.

III. OBJECTIVES

 To apply the construction and interpretation of written and spoken English

discourse accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately.

 To write sentences and short paragraphs using compound, complex, and

compound-complex sentences accurately and appropriately.

 To show good control of syntactic structures, cohesion, and coherence in written

discourse.

 To promote self – study habits among students.

IV. COURSE METHODOLOGY

This semester, blended learning will be applied as instructed by the authorities of

the University of El Salvador; that is, instruction will take place both online and on
campus, though it is expected that it will take place mostly online since there are not
enough classrooms as to accommodate all the students of the Foreign Language
Department.
The teacher will use Campus UES as the official platform, but other platforms might
also be used in case it does not work at times. Students will be provided with a vast
array of virtual materials that will enable them to consolidate the knowledge they
acquired in the previous grammar courses. Through this kind of study, students will
practice using their grammar knowledge intensively and extensively. The material for
this course will be provided weekly by each professor, but students must study any
material they consider important to reinforce their learning. Besides, to evaluate
students, there will only be five evaluations as suggested by Academic Administration;
there will be two quizzes, a mid–term exam, and a final cumulative exam.

V. EVALUATION SYSTEM

The evaluation system is distributed as shown below.
