I. Essential Ideas (10 minutes)

Communication, as the term suggest, comes from the Latin word “communis” which means
“common”.

Different Authors’ Definitions of Communication:

1. According to Cheney, communication is a process of encoding and transmitting
messages such as ideas, information, feelings and emotions using different symbols from
a sender to a receiver in order to achieve a desired goal.
2. Allen describes it as “a bridge of meaning” where it involves a process of nonstop telling,
listening, and understanding.
3. Murphy, Hildebrandt, Thomas say it is “a process of transmitting and receiving verbal
and non-verbal messages. It is considered effective when it achieves the desired
response or reaction from the receiver.”

The process of communication is:

1. Dynamic, non-static activity just as communication is an active phenomenon.
2. It involves a continuous exchange of messages between the sender and the receiver and
vice-versa during the entire communication situation.
II. Learning Experiences (15 minutes)
