DANCE AS AN ART

• Dance is a rhythmic and expressive movement of the body in successive movement usually
accompanied by music.
• It has been said to be the mother of the arts, for it’s the oldest of the art which actually reflects
man’s age old need to communicate different emotions such as joy, grief, excitement and others.
• Dance simply started as man’s own life for almost all occasions, in whatever aspects, as birth,
death, healing of the sick, asking for forgiveness, war, marriage – were celebrated by dancing.
• There are dances that express thankfulness for a good harvest, in celebration of religious
festivities, or just a mere pleasurable expression of the body. It uniquely intensifies different
moods and emotions that somehow deepen everybody’s feelings.
Elements of Dance

1. Dancer – It is the most important element of dance. Since he is the performer, there wont
be a dance without him/her. He executes the steps, follows the instructions of the
choreographer, wears the costumes, and carries the props.
2. Choreographer – He/ she is the dance director. He does the overall design of the dance,
assigns the steps to be executed by the dancer/s, selects the costumes and props that go
the dance, and determines the set designed for the dance.
3. Design – It is the planned organization or pattern in time and space. It involves the
movements and the positioning of the dancers and the steps executed by them.
4. Subject – It is the message of the dance. It tells what the dance is about.
5. Movements – these are classified into steps, gestures, and facial expressions.
Elements of Dance
6. Technique – It is the style or way of executing the movements.
7. Costumes – These are the things worn by the dancers during the
performance. These includes the head gear, the upper garment, the lower
garments and the footwear.
8. Properties – These are commonly known as props. Properties that are
carried by the dancers as they perform.
9. Set design – It is the setting or the background that indicates the place of
action for the dancers.
10. Other theatrical elements – elements such as lighting effects, sound
effects, visual effects and the like form part of a dance performance
when the dance is performed as part of a musical play or when theatrical
dance.
Kinds of Dance
1. Folk or Ethnic dance – those are performed by the members of a
tribe or ethnic group to conduct their day-to-day activities.
Examples are Mangyan dance, Muslim dance and so on.
2. Social or Ballroom dance - those performed by pairs or groups in
ballroom or dance halls to socialize. Example are chacha, boogie,
rumba, waltz, tango and so on.
3. Spectacular or theatrical dance – those performed on stage as a
spectacle to entertain the audience. Examples are ballet,
interpretative dance and modern dances.

◦1.PANDANGO SA ILAW – It’s typical folk
dance originated in Ilokano region. It’s a
very popular dance which express in
different versions. It is the most difficult
for the female dancers that they have to
balance these oil lamps, one on her
head and two on each palm. It’s a dance
of grace and skill.

2.ITIK-ITIK – This fascinating dance originated
from a dance called sibay. It is a native dance
interpreting the playfulness if duckling
wading in the river.

3.HABANERA SOLTERA – This dance is from


Ilocos Sur. This dance is performed by the
bride to be and her close friends at the
traditional social gathering on the eve of the
wedding. This is bride’s farewell to the state
of single blessedness.

4.SINGKIL – It’s a dance based on the Maranao epic
“Bantugan”. It features a beautiful princess dancing
gracefully over clashing bamboo pole nimble followed by a
nimble prince. It is a Lanao court dance which women of
royal blood have to learn.

5.TINIKLING – It is a native dance presenting using long


bamboo sticks from which the dancers hop from one pole
to another.

8. OBANDO-named after a town in
Bulacan. Obando Dance is a dance of rural
Philippines. Attire is the native "balintawak" and
"salakot" for the ladies and "barong tagalog and
"buntal" hats for the gentlemen.
9. SAKUTING- a folk dance of the Ilocanos usually
performed during Christmas. Groups of boys and
girls go to perform from house to house receiving
many gifts in return. Note the two sticks used to
produce the rhythmic sound. (

10.KAPPA MALONG MALONG- Also
called Sambi sa Malong, this Maranao dance
shows them any ways of wearing a malong, a
simple tubular yet highly functional piece of
cloth. The traditional women’s version shows
this cloth of countless colorful designs

11.BINANOGBANOG-A dance in imitation


of the hawk. Held in reverence to the bird for it
not to do harm to the community.

12.DUGSU- is a ceremonial dance among the
Manobo people in Bukidnon, Agusan and
Misamis Oriental .

13.KUMENTANG - The graceful hand


movements from the wrist going clock or
counter clockwise while dancing. this is atypical
Characteristic movement of the hands in
Philippine folk dances.
