CONTEMPORARY DANCE

OF THE PHILIPPINES
CONTEMPORARY DANCE
- is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance
genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary
dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance
movements. The term "contemporary" is somewhat misleading: it
describes a genre that developed during the mid-20th century and is still
very popular today.
Why do people dance ?
- Used in worship
- Played a role in courtship
- Joy they feel
- Primitive peoples believes that dancing bring them magic powers
- Bring victory, or to restore health to life
- Have fun or to entertain other
- Give beauty and inspiration to others
- Treat physically handicapped and emotionally distributed people

- Social dances that portray the beliefs, interests,
habits, customs, and practices of the native.

1. ITIK - ITIK
- The steps mimic the way a duck
walks, as well as the way it is
splashes water on its back to
attract a mate. According to
popular tradition, the dance was
created by lady named
KANANG
who choreographed the steps
while dancing at a baptismal party.

2.TINIKLING
- Is considered by many people to be
the Philippines’ National Dance. People
perform the dance using bamboo
poles, it composed of three basic
steps which include singles, doubles
and hops. It looks similar to playing
jump rope, except that the dancers
perform the steps around and
between the bamboo poles, and the
dance becomes faster.

3. SAYAW SA BANGKO
- Is performed on top of a narrow
bench. Dancers need good balance
as they go through a series of
movements that include some
impressive acrobatics.

4. BINASUAN
- Is an entertaining dance that is
usually performed at festive social
occasions like wedding and birthdays.
Dancers carefully balance three half-
filled glasses of rice wine on their
heads and hands as they gracefully
spin and roll on the ground.

5. PANDANGGO SA ILAW
- Is performed while balancing three
oil lamps – one on the head, and one
in each hand.

6. CARIÑOSA
- Is dance made for flirting.
Dancers make a number of
flirtatious movements as they
hide behind fans or handkerchiefs
and peek out at one another.

7. MAGLALATIK
- Is a mock war dance that depicts a
fight over coconut meat, a highly –
prized food. The dance is broken into
four parts: two devoted to the battle
and two devoted to reconciling. The
men of the dance wear coconut
shells as a part of their costumes.

8. KURATSA

- Is described as a dance of
courtship and is often performed a
weddings and other social
occasions. The dance has three
parts. The couple first performs a
waltz. In the second part, the music
sets a faster pace as the man
pursues the woman around the
dance floor in a chase. To finish, the
music becomes even faster as the
man wins over the woman with his
mating dance.

9. SURTIDO
- Is performed by a head couple
accompanied by two other couples
who lead all the dancers through
various formations that resemble
an old – fashioned.

10. SINGKIL
- Is a dance traditionally performed by
single women to attract the attention
of potential suitors. Dancers perform a
series of graceful movements as they
step in and out form between bamboo
poles which rhythmically clapped
together.

BALLROOM DANCES
- Dances of public entertainment, usually performed in
pairs in ballrooms, nightclubs, auditoriums or in public
places.

1. CHA – CHA
- Is a lively ballroom dance full of passion
and energy. The classic “Cuban Motion”
gives the cha – cha its style. Partners
work together to synchronize each
movement in perfect alignment.

2. FOXTROT
- Lots of fun and simple to learn, making it
an excellent dance for beginners. In the
foxtrot, dancers make long, smooth, flowing
movements across the floor to swing or
big-band music.

3. MAMBO
- Swaying hip movements, and holds
all contribute to the sensuality on
display in the dance.

4. PASODOBLE
- Is one of the liveliest ballroom
dances. It is modeled after sound,
sound, drama, and movement.

5. QUICKSTEP
- Is a quick version (naturally) of the
foxtrot. It is ballroom dance composed
of extremely quick stepping, syncopated
feet rhythms, and runs. The quickstep is
exciting to watch but among the most
difficult of all the ballroom dances to
master.

6. RUMBA
- Is considered by many people to
be the most romantic and sensual of
all Latin Ballroom Dances. It is often
referred to as the “Grandfather of
the Latin Dances” and its music has
an insistent 4/4 beat.

7. SAMBA
- Both young and old enjoy dancing
the samba. It can be performed
solo, such as during the Carnival in
Rio de Janiero, or with a partner
socially.

8.TANGO
- Is one of the most fascinating of
all ballroom dances. The style used
in competitors today is different
than Argentinian styles of tango.

9.VIENNESE WALTZ
- Is a quick rotating ballroom dance
with a subtle rise and fall. It is
considered one of the most difficult
dances to learn. The simple and elegant
rotational movement characterizes the
Viennese waltz. Its up to four times
faster than regular, or slow waltz and
the steps are slightly different.

10. WALTZ
- Is one of the smoothest of ballroom
dances, it is a progressive dance
marked by along, flowing movements,
continuous turns, and rise and fall. The
dance is so graceful and elegant that
waltz dancers appear to glide around
the floor with almost no effort.

- Theatrical entertainment in which
dancers, usually accompanied by
music, tell a story or express a mood
through their movements.

2. MODERN DANCE
- Focuses on a dancers own
interpretations instead of structured
steps, as in traditional ballet dancing.
Modern dancers reject the limitations of
classical ballet and favor movements
derived from the expression of their
inner feelings.

3. MUSICAL
COMEDY DANCE
- Is a type of play or film that has
singing and dancing as part of the
story and that is humorous and
entertaining, especially one written
before the middle of the twentieth
century.

4.TAP DANCE
- Characterized by using the
sounds of tap shoes striking the
floor as a form of percussion. The
sound is made by shoes that have
a metal “tap” on the heel and
toe.

ASPECTS OF DANCE
KNOWLEDGE OF CHOREOGRAPHY
- Memory of the routine and execution of the moves that were choreographed

TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Pointing toes, back straight, arm placement is not sloppy, moves are executed smoothly

PERFORMING SKILLS
- Projection of eye and cheerful facial expressions with the judges. The dancer is confidence with
movements.

RHYTM / TEMPO
- Staying on count and with the beats of the music
