As I move into my coaching philosophy, there are several different roles that a coach plays. The
coach that I want to be is a coach that lets my students take action and find their way, with me
there for support and to guide them along the way. I will strive for my athletes to find meaning in
the sport and the activities that we are doing each day. As a coach, something that I would make
one of the most important aspects of being on the team is your character. Character goes a long
way in the sports world and in the real world. My players will know that if you show respect,
you will receive respect. Courage and good sportsmanship are a given that my players will
display every practice and game. As a coach, I don’t want my team to be known as the retaliators
and the backtalkers. During every game my players will give the upmost respect to the other
teams coaches and officials. As a coach, I will make it known to my players that they will face
adversity every day of their life and it is their choice if they want to push through and grow from
it or dwell on it and let it affect their lives. My athletes will take responsibility for their actions
and be accountable for themselves and hold their teammates accountable. In order to be
accountable, communicating within the team is crucial so that everyone is on the same page. On
my team there will be leadership roles. We will have our captains, but I want it known to all my
players that just because you don’t wear a letter on your chest doesn’t mean you are any less
important. Every single player is important to the team and every player has their own role. My
athletes will support each other and better each other no matter what their role is. A motto that I
go by from the Buffalo Bills and will have my athletes go by is “don’t blink.” The don’t blink
motto means that whether we are up by 10 points or down by 10 points, don’t blink, don’t look
back and dwell, keep fighting and persevere. When my athletes understand this motto, they will
be able to problem solve and not get down on themselves or each other. One last goal that I have
as a coach that I want my athletes to really think about is to not take everything so seriously. A
loss isn’t the end of the world, and they will move on from it. Every day is a fresh start and a
new opportunity to improve. As a current athlete at a division 3 school, I face adversity all the
time and have to keep pushing and not look back. There has been good times and bad times, but
it is your choice whether you want to be better and face those challenges. As a coach, I want my
students to have good character and keep building their character throughout their lives.
