Coaching Philosophy

Joseph Lanza
Philosophy Preface:
My teaching and coaching philosophies are both built on many different teaching,
coaching, and learning values that will help ensure the success of each one of my students.
Responsibility and trustfulness are two main values of mine when teaching and coaching. Both
teachers/coaches and students/players need to be responsible for students and athletes to grow
and develop in their sport, or in education. Growing up I remembered all the responsibilities I
had as a student and athlete. The more a student trusts their teacher the stronger the relationship
and the connection is between them is, which allows for that student/athlete to be the most
successful they can be. Past personal experiences I have had play a major role in why I choose to
become a physical educator. I have had many teachers and coaches who I trusted and had a good
relationship with, and there are some I have not. I realized that all these teachers, and coaches
that I had a good, strong relationship with really helped me develop as a student and athlete and
allowed me to be successful. These teachers and coaches motivated me to be the best I can and
always work hard, they have also motivated me to push, and teach others so that they can be the
most successful they can be as a person.

My coaching philosophy derives from my past experiences playing on various sport

teams, I reflect on the philosophies and values of my old coaches to assist in formatting my own

philosophy. One of my main focuses is having a good coach-player connection with my team

which can be done through various team building tasks. I will strive to provide each one of my

players with opportunities to improve and develop their skills every time we work with each

other.

Coaches and players both have responsibilities on a team. It is my responsibility as the

coach to provide my players with knowledge, skills, tactics, and opportunities so that they could

progress in the sport. It is also my responsibility to provide structure within my team and to

provide my players with a leader and role model. It is my players responsibility to work hard,

listen, and practice on their own to contribute to improve individually, and for the success of the
team. I also must provide my players with a sense of trustworthiness. With my welcoming and

enthusiastic personality, I will make it easy for my players to trust and respect me. Having the

trust of my players will allow our relationship to strengthen which would allow us to work

greatly together and be successful. I will always create positive environments for my team which

will allow out trust to grow.

During sport competition there is either a winner or loser. How the athlete’s response to

these wins and loses defines their character and success as an athlete. I will provide my team

with individual and team goals that they should strive to complete. Utilizing my team with a set

of guidelines made by the players themselves and the coaches reviewal, will help give my teach

structure and rules to follow. If an issue arises within the team, we can always recite back to the

created guidelines and listen to each person’s perspective to come up with a solution all will

agree on. There will be open communication between the players and the players with the coach

which will decide the most effective way to deal with a team issue. Each player should be given

individualized attention to improve their skills, tactics, and strategies, as well as their cognitive

and affective skills.

I will provide my players with proper and appropriate training opportunities which meet

individual and team goals. I will allow my players to improve their skills is a variety of different

ways through appropriate development skill tasks and necessary progressions and modifications.

I will continuously provide my players with feedback and new skills and tactics to practice.

Every player will be given challenges that they must face throughout the season that will

evaluate their abilities in and out of competition. My players must recognize the importance of

respect for each teammate and their role in the game or on the team.
As a coach I will be an active listener and learner because it is important to bring

awareness to the players ideas and values. A goal of mine as a coach is to create a positive, open

environment where all players feel safe, welcomed, and supported throughout their time on my

team. I will always act as a role model and give them advice on issue inside and outside of sport

and competition. I aspire to be a positive outlet for my players and for them to feel comfortable

talking to me about any issues they might be facing on the team, individually, or just in general. I

will teach my players the value of friendships, teamwork, cooperation, and social skills which

are all concepts that they will use in their lives.

Having respect for yourself, the team, the coach, your opponent is a main concept of my

coaching philosophy that will be thoroughly taught to my players. My players will experience

encouragement and adaption to all their needs to improve individual and team performance. My

coaching philosophy ensures that the team and players I have the privilege to coach, will be

successful in all aspects of the sport, and as an individual.
