Introduction and Purpose

Work Breakdown structure involves a hierarchical decomposition of the project deliverables that
needs to be executed by the project team to attain the project objectives. The WBS is a
cornerstone in an effective project planning, control, monitoring and execution of the project
deliverables as all the tasks in the WBS are identified, scheduled, estimated and well budgeted. A
good Work Breakdown Structure is characterized by; effective time estimations, manageability,
integration, adaptability and independence. The adoption of a WBS in the Tesla Sales and
Marketing project will enable the project manager and the project team to; define and organize
the deliverables effectively, facilitate the quick development in the schedules through allocation
of estimated efforts and the identification of the potential scope.

The Project Work Plan

The Work Breakdown Structure provides an appropriate statement of the objectives and other
deliverables of the performed tasks. It is integrated with the project outcomes, the scope and
deliverables in description of the processes that are performed but does not address on the
schedule that defines deliverables which are produced. The process of the project plan in WBS
involves; gathering the critical project documents, identification of any relevant contents that
involves the project deliverables, identification of the project team, definition of the element
levels, decomposition of elements and scheduling through the Gantt Chart.

In project management, WBS offers visual methods which have detailed deliverables in the
project. This is done through defining the milestones in the hierarchy and simplifies large
projects into smaller tasks in more manageable groups. The WBS is focused on deliverables
than the activities which are required in the achievement of the milestones. In order to create a
WBS some of the rules to be observed include;

The % rule – the work and budget allotment for deliverables should add up to % and be in
hierarchical manner.
Mutually Exclusive – all deliverables and sub deliverables need to be mutually exclusive. This
implies that, the milestones can appear in the WBS twice.
Focuses on Outcomes – each deliverable is mapped in WBS but not in the action. This enables
management of scope and team members in the project be flexible.
The Work Breakdown structure is an important tool that can enable the improvement of
planning, simplification of risks identification, creation of smarter goals and enhancement of
visibility in the Tesla Giga Shanghai Sales and marketing project.
