SECTION 07320

ROOFING TILES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and


Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this
Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1. Cement tiles for roofing

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Material list and manufacturer's data.

B. Shop Drawings: indicating locations and details of movement joints.

C. Triplicate samples of tiles.

D. Installation and maintenance instructions.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Handle tiles in a manner not to chip edges or cause cracking to surfaces.


Cement, packaged materials for mortar and grout shall be furnished in bags
displaying the manufacturer's trade mark and indicating type of material.
Cement shall be dry and free of lumps and shall be stored over damp-proofed
wood blocks minimum 100 mm clear from ground in a dry and weather-tight
location.

B. Sand shall be stored and handled in such a manner as to prevent intermixing


with foreign matter.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Cement: For manufacturing of tiles and for mortar beds, cement shall
be a standard brand of Portland cement conforming to Egyptian
Standard Specification (ESS) No. 373 .

B. Sand : For manufacturing of tiles and for mortar beds, shall be clean, siliceous
sharp, properly graded for the purpose and shall conform to ESS No. 1108.
Clay, loam and silt content shall not exceed 3%.

C. Water: Potable.

D. Joints Sealants: Urethane Sealant as specified in Division 7, Section "Joint


Sealants".

2.2 CEMENT TILES

A. Cement tiles shall be durable, hard wearing ductless and shall withstand
moderate impact and resist the effect of oils and weak acids.

1. Fabrication shall be casting in steel moulds under pressure. Tiles shall


have keyed backs.
2. Cement tiles shall confirm to ESS No. 269. Top surface of tiles shall be
level, homogeneously colored and free from cracking or hair cracking,
crazing, fission, scaling, pitting, creepiness, flaking and efflorescence.
3. Tiles shall be sounding when slightly hammered, cross sections shall be
homogeneous and uniform and shall be free from cavity-voids.
4. Cement tiles shall be tested for abrasion resistance, rectitude of edges,
bulk density, water absorption, levelness of top surface, lengths and total
thickness.
5. Test results shall not exceed permissible limits by ESS No. 269.
6. Cement tiles for roofing shall be two-layer cement tiles to ESS No. 269,
fabricated from cement-sand mortar. Backing layer shall be composed
of cement sand mortar at the ratio of 1:3 by volume, cement to sand.
Facing layer shall not be less than 6 mm thick and shall be composed of
cement sand mortar at the ratio of 1:2; cement to sand with addition of a
chemical or mineral admixture to increase resistance to abrasion and to
water absorption.
7. Unless otherwise indicated on Drawings, size of cement roofing tiles
shall be 200 x 200 x 20 mm.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Prior to setting all units, inspect surfaces and arrange for the satisfactory
correction of defects. Grounds, bucks, outlet and receptacle boxes, rough
plumbing and other fixtures and fittings shall be in place and trenches, chases
or other openings decks properly closed.

3.2 WORKMANSHIP

A. Work shall be carefully laid out, avoiding small, unsightly cuts. Use of thin
cuts and pieces, chipped, spalled or otherwise disfigured tiles shall not be
accepted.

3.3 SETTING BEDS FOR TILES

A. Mortar for setting beds shall be composed of 250 kg cement per cubic meter
of sand with sufficient mixing water.

3.4 SETTING OF TILES

A. Tiles shall be thoroughly soaked in clean water for at least one hour prior to
setting and shall be applied to setting beds while damp, but without free
water on the back of tile.

B. Tiles shall be accurately set, firmly pressed and tamped into full mortar beds
with well fitted joints in true planes, graded or level and neatly cut and fitted
closely against abutting work.

C. Intersections and returns shall be accrately formed and cuts rubbed smooth
with fine stone. Cut edges shall be set against fixtures or other tile with at
least a 1 mm joint.

D. Beds that have partially hardened shall not be retempered.

E. Movement Joints: are to be to the full depth of roof tiling and mortar bedding,
extending entire perimeter of tiling area and at 5-meter intervals in both
directions. Install filler during setting of tiles. Completely seal movement
joints after grouting of normal joints.

3.5 SETTING TOLERENCES

A. Gradual variation of surface plane of tile floorings shall not exceed 4.5 mm in
3 m from level or slope when tested with 3 m straight edge.

3.6 GROUTING

A. Thoroughly wash out floor tile joints and saturate with clean water before
grouting. Grout joints after setting bed is dry with natural colour ordinary
Portland cement mixed with water to a slurry consistency and thoroughly
forced into joints to fill entire depth.

3.7 BASES

A. Bases shall be integral cement tiles units, same as used for roofs.

B. Top Edge: Shall be straight, unfinished.

C. Setting Mortar- Same proportions as used for roofs with stiff consistency to fill
back of tiles entirely.

D. Firmly press and tamp tiles into backing mortar with well fitted vertical joints,
level and aligned top edge.

E. Fill any open vertical joints with grout as specified.

3.8 PROTECTION

A. Close grouted floors to traffic completely for 24 hours after installation.

3.9 CLEANING AND CURING

A. After grouting has sufficiently set or hardened, tile surface shall be cleaned
and traces of cement or dust accumulations and foreign matter shall be
completely removed.

B. A layer of clean sand shall be spread over tile floor and shall be kept wet with
water at a period of ten days for curing and shall be left to protect tile floor
surface till the Engineer's order to clear and clean the surface of tiles.
