1. In your own words Compare different types of blood vessels and their roles.

Blood vessels carry blood throughout the body. Arteries carry blood from the heart. Veins
carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries surround the cells and tissues of the body to
supply and absorb oxygen, nutrients, and other substances.

2. Define respiration, and explain how it differs from cellular respiration.

This consists of the expulsion of gases from the lungs. During inspiration, the intercostal
muscles and the diaphragm contract, allowing air to enter the lungs. During expiration, the
muscles used for inspiration relax causing gases to be expelled from the lungs.

3. Explain how digestion and absorption occur in the small intestine.

From the small intestine, undigested food passes into the large intestine through a muscular
ring or valve that prevents food from re-entering the small intestine. When food reaches the
large intestine, the nutrient absorption process is almost complete.

4. Describe the roles of the kidneys in homeostasis.

The kidneys also balance the volume of fluids and minerals in the body. This balance is
called homeostasis. If you put all the water you drink in one pan of a scale and all the water
your body excretes in the other pan, both pans should balance.
