BACKGROUND
Eswatini is a landlocked country in Southern Africa bordering South Africa and Mozambique, with a
population of 1.2 million. Poverty levels have stagnated at high levels in the last five years, with 39.7%
of the population estimated to have been living under the international $1.90 poverty line in 2016 and
2017. The current population of Eswatini in 2022 is 1,201,670, a 0.79% increase from 2021. At about 27
percent, Eswatini has the world’s highest HIV prevalence rate among adults aged 15 to 49, a driver and
consequence of high poverty and inequality. In a context of historically persistent and high poverty and
inequality, the COVID-19 pandemic presents the risk of reversing the modest gains that have been
made. 58.9% of Emaswati lived below the national poverty line in 2017. The $1.90/person/day
international poverty rate has hovered around 30% since 2016. This, together with high inequality levels
– with a consumption per capita Gini index of 54.6 in 2017 – increases vulnerability to economic shocks.
There is a dire need for youth empowerment programmes which will uplift the youth and this is vital
because the youth makes up a large sum of the total population. Eswatini’s future is in its youth
therefore investing in the youth by the government will prove to be very fruitful in the near future.

CLIENT BRIEF
Organizations and governments around the world are also heavily investing in specialised courses aimed at improving technical and
academic skills. These initiatives are a welcome change because they enable students and working employees to actively analyse business
paradigm and to expand their job opportunities. These courses are relevant and help you keep up with the latest technology and regulations of
the industry. Eswatini is no different from these other countries because it has proposed a skills development centre called the National Skill
Development Centre, which aims to provide the population of this country with the necessary skills to sustain themselves and develop the
country as well through their knowledge of technical skills. This skills centre will mainly focus on skills such as construction, agriculture, basic
metal production and construction. This aims at closing the gap of the shortage of skilled technicians available in the kingdom.
Major aims and objectives of the centre include:
 Offering vocational courses for the youth
 Helping students to discover their interests, aptitudes and potentialities
 Guidance for choice of appropriate courses and future career
 Maximizing their potentialities and boosting self confidence
 Provide training in various trades that are in high demand in society and have good job prospects

TARGET AUDIENCE
 The youth in Swaziland has a large population relative to the country’s population, which is about 45% of the Swazi nation. Close to 4 out of 5 Swazis are
younger than 35 years old, and over 1 in 3 are between the ages of 15 and 35.
 Eswatini youth unemployment rate for 2021 was 50.90%, a 0.02% decline from 2020.
 Eswatini youth unemployment rate for 2020 was 50.91%, a 4.32% increase from 2019.
 Eswatini youth unemployment rate for 2019 was 46.59%, a 0.1% increase from 2018.
 Eswatini youth unemployment rate for 2018 was 46.49%, a 0.12% increase from 2017.

Development challenges in Eswatini

 Being a small and landlocked country, makes Eswatini vulnerable to international and regional developments. The Russia-Ukraine war contributed to rising oil
and food prices, hurting the poor most. Already, poverty, unemployment, inequality, and HIV prevalence levels have historically been high.
 The June-July political unrest resulted in the destruction of physical assets, theft of inventory, and constrained operational hours, its impact on production was
partly mitigated as firms accessed a Reconstruction Fund set up by the Government to cushion business from damages of the political unrest.
 The worldwide pandemic of COVID 19 also struck the kingdom hard in all sectors.
