Unit Learning Outcomes

LO1. Undertake a survey to establish a station network for horizontal and vertical control.
LO2. Explain the process of undertaking a topographic survey.
LO3. Apply industry standard techniques in the production, transferring and staking out of co-
ordinates of multiple construction elements.
LO4. Prepare a report on the causes of errors and techniques to improve accuracy, including the use
of digital data.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

Scenario 1

The control points of any grid has to be so constructed and protected that they are not disturbed during
the course of construction.

a. Identify the types of control networks and shortly describe about it with the aid of diagram?
(200 words) – (P1)

b. The following particulars are given for a closed traverse ABCDEF and G

Line Length Corrected Bearing

AB 31.02 1870 20’ 20”

BC 47.18 1850 39’ 20”

CD 43.01 1240 01’ 00”

DE 50.72 0380 43’ 20”

EF 53.02 0160 15’ 45”

FG 33.18 2850 54’ 35”

GA 42.25 2730 10’ 20”

I. Prepare a traverse sheet and calculate latitude and departure of each line (P2)
II. Calculate the Corrected latitude and departure of each line (P3)
III. Calculate the independent co-ordinates of the station B C D E F and G. Assume that the co-
ordinates of station A is (100mN, 200mE) (M1 and D1)

Scenario 2 (Use maximum 600 words)
A proposed land is carried out the grid method of contour surveying in 20m interval. In this surveying,
contour profile has been performed and which is illustrated in Figure – 01.

a) Briefly compare, with the aid of diagrams, the grid and radial methods of contouring (P4)
b) State the application of the above two methods in civil engineering (P5)
c) Figure – 04 shows the proposed land and spot levels are taken from the basic principle of
levelling. The formation level of the ground is taken as 12.5m

Figure – 01: Proposed Land

Reproduce this figure - 04 in scale of 1:500 and sketch the 13m, 14m, and 15m contour in 1m
vertical interval (use the linear interpolation method and only one grid calculation need to be
written and plot the other points as usual) - (M2)

d) Find the volume of earth to be removed from the site. (D1)

Depth of Excavation No of rectangle

Corners Product (h × n)
(h) m in which occurs (n)

Scenario 3
Total Station integrates the functions of a theodolite for measuring angles, an EDM (Electronic Distance
Measuring equipment) for measuring distances, digital data and information recording

a) Identify and describe any Five different “applications of Total Station” in civil engineering (Students
can’t write the same description in their application) – 200 words (P6)
b) State the main steps in setting out a building using Total station from the known Bench mark

200 words (P7)

c) What are the steps carried out in checking the accuracy of setting out work in total station surveying

150 words (M3)

d) Analyze the accuracy of setting out work using Total station in building construction

150 words (D2)

which is categorized as advanced surveying. Nowadays, GPS is used in setting out works

a. Explain the “main principle of GPS” in the Surveying application and describe the errors occurred
in the GPS surveying – 200 words (P8)

b. Identify and describe five reasons for occurring errors in GPS surveying? 200 words - (P9)

c. What are the methods used in Digital data’s output in surveying study and evaluate the causes in
digital surveying errors occurred in setting out work - 200 words (M4)

d. What are techniques commonly utilized to overcome the errors and improving the accuracy in
detail surveying work specially in the setting out work – 150 words (D3)
