Gather

Ethical

 Children autonomy, including the two children being ignorance versus one child securing his
safety.
 In this case, the ethical problem is the right to life of the three children. According to Article 2 of
the Human Rights Act, nobody can attempt to end your life, not even the government. When
making decisions that could put you in risk or affect your life expectancy, public authorities
should also take into account your right to life.

Virtues

 The right to life of the two children as they were playing near at the operational track due to
ignorance and that one child securing his safety playing near the abandoned track.
 This is recognized by law; every person's right to life must be guaranteed by the law. No one
shall be sentenced to death or be put to death.
 Consideration and respect for the children’s ignorance and innocence about playing in a railway.
 The train driver's right to put passengers first, even if doing so results in the unintentional loss of
life of one or more people.
 This is recognized by the law; Since the operating railway is built for a train to pass by rather
than for children to play with.
 The responsibility of the train driver to make decisions and take actions based on his
professional judgment in a way that will benefit the majority of the passengers.
 How heavily does the train driver be punished if I change its course to the disused track? Will I
be put into jail by changing its course? Or Should I let the 2 children near at the operational
track die?
 Also, according to the law of train accidents, if there are no train flaws and railroad bystanders
behave negligently despite repeated warnings, compensation may not be awarded, and charges
and the severity of the case may also be lessened.

Alternatives

Comparing
 Initially, if the children hear and listened my shouting to them to stay away near the operational
track, no life will be loss or sacrifice.
 Also, by trying to get the driver’s attention by signaling that there are two children playing near
the abandoned track he will probably full stop, the risk of a sudden train derailing could bring
injury or even deaths to the passengers of the train.
 If above is unsuccessful, I can save the kids by myself however it can put myself at risk.
 Also, If I let the train to pass through to the operational track the two children lives were
sacrificed but the passengers safety could be ensured.
Consider
IF I LET THE COURSE OF THE TRAIN CONTINUE TO PASS BY THROUGH THE OPERATIONAL
TRACK
 The two children will die
 the one child near at the abandoned track will be safe
 The train will pass through and the passenger’s safety was secured.
 It will hurt my pride for not saving the two children
IF I SAVE THE TWO CHILDREN NEAR THE OPERATIONAL TRACK BY MYSELF
 The two children will be safe
 My life will be at risk
 the train can pass through and the passenger’s safety is secured
IF I TRY TO SHOUT TO THE CHILDREN NEAR AT THE OPERATIONAL TRACK
 The children may hear it and they will run as fast as they can to the safety place.
 If the children did not hear it, they will die
IF I CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE TRAIN TO THE ABANDONED TRACK
 the child near the operational track will die
 the driver and the passenger’s life will be at risk due to the unexpected change of
course.
 I will be sentence in jail because the one child will die and the other passengers will put
their lives to risk which can be also resulted to dying due to the unsudden change of
course of the train.
IF I TRY TO GET THE ATTENTION OF THE DRIVER FOR WARNING
 The children playing near the operational track will be safe. Also, that one child near the
abandoned track
 The passengers will be at risk due to the sudden stop of the train. They may get injuries
or can it be resulted to loss of lives.

Decision
 Think about what would have just happen if such occurrence happened?
 In this case, I will not be going to change the course of the train to the abandoned track
because the one child near the abandoned track secured his safety. And he made the
right decision that he opted to play in a secured place. And, I think if I had to sacrifice his
life due to the ignorance of his two friends that will be unfair. Meanwhile, since there is
still time, I will save the two children by running through them and leading them to a
safe place far away from the operational track. With that, no lives will be sacrificed and
it satisfies the virtues and values while still establishing a paradigmatic balance of
outcomes following a deep evaluation of the alternative options and evidence.
