coins.
They’ll take metal strips and they’ll put them into a machine. Then the machine punches out
and it used to be manually done to hunt over 200 years ago.
You will literally press down and punch out a coin.
Then you would have a design that you would press into the metal that makes the
coin look like what we think of now.
Think of a quarter that has George Washington on it.
The quarter has a design on the machine both front and back.
So when the metal strip comes through, the machine presses down and makes an
imprint on the metal to tell us, you know what coin that is. The coins that are created in
today’s world, they make a one cent, a five cent, a 10 cent, a 25 cent, a 50 cent and a
dollar coin.
They are all shaped differently and they all look different, so we can tell what the
value of that coin is when we go spend something and buy something in the store.
Then we also went to paper money.
We have two locations, one in Washington D.C and one in Fort Worth, Texas.
They’re called the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
What they do is they make printed money and t’s the same type of idea.
You have a pattern, you have something that’s changed over the years too.
You have a print that goes onto the money and then the money is chopped up into how
we look at a bill.
If I hand you a dollar, it’s a certain shape, all of our money has a certain shape to it.
But then it has a design on it and a number on it to tell us what that dollar bill stands for.
The biggest bill ever printed was the $100,000 bill printed in 1934.
It was a way for big businesses and banks to exchange large amounts of money, so it really
wasn’t for our use. We get the smaller bills.
When I say circulation, the money that’s out there, it has to be replaced from time to
time.
If a dollar bill gets really old, what a bank will do is a bank will say to the government”
we’ve got a whole bunch of dollar bills, that we have $200 worth of dollar bills that
aren’t any good anymore, we need to replace them.
So the government will print more, send it to the bank and exchange the money.
They destroy the old money and make new.
