Behaviour Modification and Its Impact on Motivation

In an organization, behaviour modification is the process of encouraging desired

behaviour and discouraging undesirable behaviour. It is always beneficial for an organization
to ensure that behaviour modification takes place. Managers reward employees who perform
well in order to encourage that behaviour in an organization, Ryan & Deci (2020). They also
ensure that unsuitable behaviour is discouraged by instituting effective disciplinary measures.

Example of Unsatisfactory Behaviour

If an employee arrives at work drunk and bothers other employees, their ability to do
their job will be affected. Managers have the authority to discipline such employees in an
organization. Employers can demonstrate their sincerity in getting the employee to stop
the bad behaviour by writing a warning letter or even suspending the employee for a period
of time.

Importance of Goal Setting

Goal setting forms a blueprint of how one behaves and the ability to achieve the set
goals. It guides employees on day-to-day behaviour in an organization and dictates what is
supposed to be done. Goals also form a basis for comparison by comparing the actual and the
planned to identify any form of variance.

Importance of Proper Goal Setting

Setting specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound goals acts as a day-
to-day guide in how employees behave. It gives them the directions they are supposed to take
and forms the blueprint of what is expected. This sets employees on their toes to achieve the
said targets.

Question

Almost all businesses face labour-related issues. Conflicts exist between co-
workers, bosses, and even some stakeholders are at odds. One of the major issues in
employee relations is the lack of privacy presumption when business owners hire
employees. Policies that allow security personnel to examine voicemails, emails, and
internet activities are common in businesses. The problems that employees face in the
workplace have grown as a result of the increased intrusion of audio and video
surveillance. Workers lose trust in upper management and corporate leaders when they

believe that everything they do is being watched. Has the organization's performance
suffered as a result of this conflict? Is it causing workplace dissatisfaction? Is it
damaging to the organization's reputation? How can it be fixed? Is behaviour
modification beneficial? If so, how? Has it aided any organizations? Can you give some
good examples? Is it true that behaviour modification discourages some employees?
What is the relationship between behaviour modification and motivation?
