Periodontitis refers to the inflammation of supporting periodontal tissues surrounding the tooth. “It is caused
by specific group of microorganisms (periodontal bacteria) and results in the progressive destruction of
periodontal fibers and alveolar bone”. It is the most common type with a slow progression rate and most
commonly affects adults, but rarely seen amongst children and adolescents. It is associated with
accumulation of plaque and calculus. But the rate of progression hugely depends on: Local Factors like
Teeth Restorations, Systematic Factors like HIV, Diabetes and finally Environmental Factors like Cigarette
Smoking. The majority of the population all over the world is affected by gingivitis and chronic
periodontitis. Gingivitis is basically the earlier stages of the latter.
