ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Engineering is a branch of Science and Technology where society expects lots of innovation and
creativity from engineers. But today’s education system has become very stereotype which just
follows the traditional teaching learning process. This needs to be change in order to have
maximum contribution from engineering students to the Society.

Final year report is an initiative taken by Gujarat Technology University in this direction with
the help and guidance of the professors of IITs and the GTU Innovation Council we are looking
ahead in moving on the path of innovation.

Final year report is a general term that covers multiple engineering disciplines including
chemical engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, civil
engineers, computer engineers, Information technology and structural/building/architectural
engineers. The uniting concept is a focus on applying the ‘engineering design process, in which
engineers develop new products or processes with a primary emphasis on functional utility.

While industrial designers may be responsible for the conceptual aesthetic and ergonomic
aspects of a design, the final year report usually works with a team of engineers and other
designers to develop conceptual and detailed designs. They may work with industrial designers
and marketers to develop the product concept and specifications, and may direct the design
effort.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Solid waste is one of the biggest problem of civil society. In this project, agriculture waste from
bagasse and banana fibers have been used to produce handmade paper. These fibers were
collected, dried under the sun and passed through water vat to remove dust. Next, it is cooked
with 10% caustic solution in pressure cooker and then blended in mixer for different timing.
Diluted solution of Clorox was used for discoloration and purification of pulp.
Three types of papers were made from ready pulp. First type was by made by using raw material
only, second type by addition of 2% of CaCO3 and 2% of starch. And the third types by addition
of 5% of both additives.
These papers were dried and then ironed for straightening. GSM, pH, Thickness, Bulk, and
Moisture Content were calculated for all types of papers. It was found that papers from bagasse
fibers are heavy and suitable for heavy and rough usage. While paper from banana fibers are
useful for soft usage like tissues, wipes, tracing paper etc. This project is ecofriendly as it used
agricultural waste and only little electricity was used.

Advantages of handmade paper from bagasse:-

 Reduce pollution
 It is eco-friendly
 Low cost
 Agriculture waste disposal
 By adding caco3 increase in quality

Disadvantages of handmade paper from bagasse:-

 Time consuming
 Cost of sugarcane
Chapter 2: Evaluation of idea
 2.1 observation record sheet:-
 (AEIOU frame work):- A-E-I-O-U means A for Activity, E for Environment, I
for Interaction, O for Observation and U for user. AEIOU framework will help
to learn the issues. AEIOU framework is a key element to record the observation
of society.

 ACTIVITY:- Activity means what people do in project.

First our activities is collect sugarcane and crushed it in crusher and make bagasse. So we
remove agriculture waste and use this bagasse for paper making.

 Bagasse is used for paper making also make positive impact on environment, because we
can use agriculture waste so it not harmful for environment.

 Interaction ::-
 After the production of paper, it is important to inform and convince sellers and buyers to
use it.
 It can be done through various communication mediums. The producer can interact and
communicate to dealers, stakeholders and other people and discuss about paper.
 The producer can reach the buyer through different mediums of advertising like TV,
radio, social media, newspaper and also through e-commerce website.

 Object :-

 this process of paper making is time consuming.

 Users :-
 After making paper from bagasse we can increasing quality of paper by adding
calcium carbonate and starch. So we can use in commercial purpose.
2.3 Empathy Canvas ::-

User: people , Students, Stationary

Story Boarding:

Happy: making of paper from sugarcane bagasse and banan fiber is cheap and effecticient.

Happy :it is eco friendly and we can reduce deforestation.

Sad: time and money is needed to produce right kind of paper.

Sad: paper may not be able to afford the blender, screen and other such material.
2.4 Ideation canvas :-
2.6 Product Development canvas ::-

People :-

1. students
2. Manufactures
3. Transporters
4. Dealers
5. Users

Product experience :-

1. Reduces pollution
2. Eco Friendly
3. Remove agriculture waste

Redesign :-

1. Improve quality of paper

2. Improve strength

Product function :-

1. Making paper from bagasse instead of tree wood.

2. Developing good paper for education and commercial purpose.
2.7 Prototype ::-

WORKING MODEL:-
 Conclusion :-
In this project Bagasse and Banana Fibers were used in making handmade paper.
It is clear from this study that both bagasse and banana fibers have good
properties and can be easily used as raw material for handmade papers in lab or
home.
By adding the suitable additives like CaCO3 and starch, properties of paper can
be enhanced. CaCO3 helped in giving white color to paper and worked as filler
and starch serve as glue in holding fibers together. It is clear from results that
bagasse fibers are heavier and this paper can be used for rough usages like
packaging and banana fibers are suitable for sophisticated usages tissues, wipes
etc.
