Program Day 1 Outline

12:00- 12:30 Greetings & Lunch


~Intro
Discuss what they’ll learn throughout the course of the camp.

12:30-12:45
-Appeals: Ethos Pathos Logos
-How to leverage these appeals in their arguments
-How to make effective use of searching devices
Aka google scholar, databases
-How to confidently talk in front of other people
-How to structure arguments
-The importance of Delivery

Today’s Objective is Ice Breakers Whilst EMploying structuring and Appeals-Gaining Basic
Comfortability in Public Speaking
12:45-1:00
Intro to Ice Breaker: Have everyone go around the room and have them say their name, what
they currently know about debate,their experience level, and what super power they would have
if they could choose one.

1:00-1:30
~Intro to outlining an argument
Claim→Warrant→Impact
Show them how to lay it out providing arious of my own examples then go around the room and
have everyone say the funniest claim, warrant, and impact that they can think of about
something that’s happened to them in the past.
Ex.

~The importance of hook (leads into next ice breaker)


Claim, warrant, impact sequence
-How to know what points to make when give limited time to make an argument
-Have 5 different topics, go around the room and have each of them state the next step
Ex1. One person says global warming is an issue, next person says that this is true because
Polar ice caps melting, next person says that the impact is that it causes more frequent coastal
storms due to rising sea levels.
Ex2. One person makes a claim that riding a bike without a helmet is dangerous, and the next
person warrants this by saying that it leaves your head vulnerable to injury if you hit it on
something when falling off, and the next person says that this could lead to a concussion

Bathroom Break 1:30-1:45

Ice Breakers: 1:45-2:15


1) Have them pair up and ask each other a series of question so that they can make a speech
on -the other person
They will then outline their speech utilizing claim warrant and impact for 3 different things that
they discovered that the other person likes to do (Brief Outline being implemented)

2:15-2:35
Help walk them through modifying their speeches based on my and peer feedback

2:35-2:50
Speech reruns.

2:50-3:15 Introduction to flowing (Assessment of where their currently at and give


pointers, more in-depth analysis of it will be had at a later session)
Have the kids go up and first state how their weekend made them feel in one word, then have
them talk about their weekend for 1 minute and 30 seconds one by one while everyone tries to
write down as many important details as possible as to why their weekend was the word that
they first stated.

3:15-4:00
Ice Breaker #2) Have Kids Pair up with someone new and they each choose two topics that
they want to debate on ex. Apples to Oranges or Flying Super Power to Teleportation
- Each kid will complete a true debate to the best of their ability and flow the other person's
argument to the best of their ability

Each team may use up to one minute of prep time
