WHAT IS DIALOGUE?
Dialogue is a reciprocal
conversation between two
people even more, in contrast
to discuss that tend to have the
aim of reaching an agreement,
solving problems, or winning
someone's opinion because
dialogue is not a technique for
solving problems or conflicts.

In daily life:
conversation between
two people or more.

DIALOGUE IN LITERARY WORKS
OF STORY (PROSE)
In writing prose, both fiction and non-fiction, there are three basic
rules for writing dialogue.
a. Punctuation marks used in writing dialogue are double quotation
marks (“...”) and single quotation marks ('...') which are usually used to
write quotations within quotations. An example of using double
quotes is "How do you know that I'm angry?" while the example in
using single quotes is “Even when I provoked him, he said 'I'm not
afraid', so we fought at that time”.
b. Dialog tags are used to link the dialogue with the speaker. Dialogue
can be placed before or after the writer's narration. For example: I
said, “Please close the door” and Yasmine said “Answer my question.”
c. Line breaks are usually used to separate lines of spoken dialogue
between speakers. For example: That afternoon in the library Rose
said to Jessica, "Please help me bring my book" Then Jessica replied
"Okay, Rose," as she took the book.
DIRECT AND INDIRECT DIALOGUE
There are two main ways for writers to convey the
content of a conversation between two characters, by
direct and indirect dialogue
a. Indirect dialogue. Written without using double
quotes or single quotes. This type of dialogue is used by
the author to tell that the conversation has taken place
and get the point of what the character is saying
without writing every word that is conveyed. For
example: She told him that she asked for a piece of
paper that was on the table.
b. Direct dialogue. In contrast to indirect dialogue,
direct dialogue is when the speaker is speaking and the
words are written using double quotes or single quotes.
DIALOGUE IN DRAMA
Dialogue in a drama or scenario is easy to
understand because dialogue is the only
thing that becomes the core of a drama or
scenario. These are the basic rules for
writing dialogue in dramas.
The example of writing dialogue in drama:
Peter: “Hi Clara, how are you?”
Clara: “Oh hi Peter! I’m fine, long time no
see."
Peter: "I've been busy working on my thesis
lately."
Clara: “Cheer up, Peter. Good luck!"
WHAT IS MONOLOGUE?
Monologue is a scientific term that
comes from the word "mono"
means one and “log” or “logi” which
means science. It can be
interpreted that monologue is an
applied science that teaches about
acting where only one person is
needed to do the scene or sketch.
In short, a monologue is a
conversation between a person
with themself.
the form of a person's
opinion that collaborated
with a silent sentence or
dialogue

involving one person

without an interlocutor
or partner
CHARACTERISTICS
OF MONLOGUE ican interact with the
audience just to give an
impression of their
actions

idescribes with consistently

but interacts with one to
another messages
CONCLUSION
From the explanation above, we can
see that dialogue is a conversation
between two people or more, while
monologue is a conversation between
person and themself. To understand
dialogue and monologue, we can
analyze the expression and intonation
that used by the person who is
speaking. Dialogue and discussion are
two different things. Dialogue aims to
provide information or opinions, while
discussion is more likely aim to solve a
problem or conflict.
