What is it?

Granddad's new pet

Is white and pale red
And lives in a glass
That he keeps near his bed. [4]

It smiles up at me
When I pay it a call
And breathes underwater
No trouble at all. [8]

He feeds it on tablets
That bubble and splutter
Though never with biscuits
Or smooth tasty butter. [12]

And that's why it's stayed

About the same size
And hasn't grown fingers,
Elbows or eyes. [16]

I fed it some jam

Because it looked sad
But it just wouldn't touch it
And granddad got mad. [20]

I started to worry
About his poor pet
Thought that I'd take it
Along to the vet. [24]

Went to his bedroom,

And crept in to get it,
But suddenly Granddad appeared
And just ate it. [28]

When the Ants Came Home
Seeing the ants rushing behind the lone survivor, I knew that our last minute in this world was
at hand. I decided then that if I must die, let me die doing my last experiments. I ran into the
laboratory and slammed the doors shut.

A few hours later, a sharp instrument cut around the door like a knife through butter and the
door fell with a big noise. Six giant ants crawled in one behind the other. Standing on hind legs,
the leader leaned on the table as if to study my experiment. The awful smell emanating from the
insects' bodies made me push the leader away gently. Still , it did not try to attack me. But soon
I felt my limbs slowly turning numb starting from the legs upward. It did not hurt; I only felt
terribly tired and wanted to lie down and sleep. Before I fainted, I discovered that a colourless
spray from a device attached to the front leg of the leader had caused this.

When I came to my senses, I found myself on a low cart that moved. A few field rats were pulling
the cart as horses do. It was unbelievable how the ants ordered the rats to do all kinds of jobs.
They took me to a broad tunnel - their community dining hall and restroom. This was how my
prison life began.

I spent five long years in the ant world under the surface of the earth. By and by, I was allowed a
certain degree of freedom. I can say I was even treated as a person of some importance. I found
out why the ant world was silent. Our ears can only hear sounds of certain pitches within a
certain range. The giant ants have a terribly high-pitched voice, much too high for the human
ear. On the other hand, our pitch is too low for the ants to hear. With the help of a device
attached to my ears, I began to hear the ants' voices. The leader taught me their language from

morning to night.

One day, an earthquake shook the ground. The ants ran in all directions. I too ran till I was out of
breath. The ground cracked under us again. I cried out desperately in the language of ants.
Suddenly I stopped running and looked around. I was standing alone, about a kilometre from the
seashore. This was the chance I was waiting for, my only chance! It was either escape or death. I
ran to the seashore. I picked up some pieces of wood and old rope lying around, made some kind
of raft, tied myself to the raft for fear of falling off it and drifted out into the sea. I was cold and
hungry and was tossed about by the waves for four days till chance brought me near the Indian
Liner Yamuna .
