Q.1. Determine the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the spring-mass system (𝑚1 =
𝑚2 = 𝑚) shown in Fig.1 which is constrained to move in the vertical direction only.
Fig: 1 Fig: 2
Q.2. The two-degrees-of-freedom system shown in Fig.2 consists of two masses on a string (with
constant tension T) vibrator in the vertical plane. If 𝑚1 = 𝑚, 𝑚2 = 2𝑚 and 𝑙1 = 𝑙2 = 𝑙, 𝑙3 = 0.5𝑙,
find the natural modes of vibration for small transverse displacement 𝑥1 and 𝑥2 .

Q.4. Figure 4 shows an undamped two-degrees-of-freedom vibrating system. Assuming small
angles of oscillation, obtain the equation of motion for the system.

Q.5. Determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes for the torsional system shown in Fig.5
for 𝐼1 = 𝐼0 , 𝐼2 = 2𝐼0 , and 𝑘1 = 𝑘2 = 𝑘0 .
Q.6. Two identical springs support a rigid mass less rod and two identical masses. Determine the
two natural frequencies of motion for the two-mass system shown in Fig.6.
Fig: 7 Fig: 8
Q.7. Determine the matrix differential equations of motion of the damped two-degrees-of-freedom
system shown in Fig.7.
Q.8. Determine the general motion of the forced vibration system shown in Fig.8.
Q.9. The system of Fig.9 represents an airfoil section being tested in a wind tunnel. Let the airfoil
have total mass 𝑚 and mass moment of inertia 𝐼𝐶 about the mass center 𝐶, and derive the
differential equations of motion.
Q.10. Figure 10 shows a system of gears mounted on shafts. The radii of gears 𝐴 and 𝐵 are related
by 𝑅𝐴 /𝑅𝐵 = 𝑛. Derive the differential equations for the torsional motion of the system.
