INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE


Course Description: Accounting Laboratory/Workshop I
Course Justification
This course tends to introduce and expose the students to the practical aspect of the subject
involving computation, preparation and application of computer in preparing financial
transactions. This course is relevant majorly in the manufacturing sector of the economy.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the students should be able to understand:

• Definition of Computer and Types of Computer.


• Functions of Computer.
• Computer Hardware and Software.
• Application Software.
• Using Microsoft Excel to prepare Payroll.
• Management of data, create visually persuasive charts and graphs.
• Using Microsoft Excel to create an expense report, build formulas.
• Printing of Documents.

Course Expectations
Every class is expected to be an interactive one. Therefore, students are expected to be
punctual and attend lectures, participate actively in class and Practical Session, read
recommended texts and lecture materials, do all assignments and tests as given.

Course Delivery Strategies


1. Two hours of both lecture and practical session per week.
2. Lecturing will be complemented with both theory and practical aspect.
3. Lecturing to be aided by Audio Visual where and when necessary.

Course Duration: Two hours per week for 15 weeks (30 hours)

Module 1 Computer System
 Week 1 & 2: Introduction to computer system:
 Definition of Computer.
 Types of Computer.
 Functions of Computer.
 Purpose of Computer.
 Characteristics of Computer.

 Be able to explain different characteristics of computer.

 Description
Computerised Accounting System of any organisation is the application of accounting
software in preparing financial information of an organisation for the user of financial
statement. Management need a variety of financial information to plan, to control and to
make decisions. Information regarding the financial aspects of performance and position
of an organisation is provided by the computerised accounting system.
First hour
Definition and purpose of computer system, The types of computer, Different
characteristics of a computer.
Second hour
Practical training session: Students will be given practical questions to solve using
SAGE 50 accounting software and solution to the questions would be review together
with the lecturer.

Week 3 & 4
Topic: Computer Hardware and Software
 Definitions of Computer Hardware and Software.
 Types of Computer software.
 System Software e.g Window 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista.
 Application Software e.g Microsoft Excel, Peach Tree Accounting Packages,
SAGE 50, SAGE Evolution etc.

Objectives
After studying this module, students will
 Understand the importance of accounting software to accounting profession
 Be able to explain computer hardware and software.
 Be able to explain differences between computer hardware and software.

Study Question:
In connection with control of materials, you are required to:
i. Define computer hardware
ii. Differentiate between computer hardware and software
iii. State four computer hardware you know.

problems and preparation of financial report.

 Understand how to prepare payroll schedule
 Be able to explain factors to be considered in developing a computerised
accounting system.
 Understand how to format cells in Microsoft Excel (Rows and Columns).

 Using Sage 50 to prepare payroll and inventory.
 Overview of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in
computerised financial reporting.
 Practical Session.

After studying this module, students will

 Understand the regulatory framework of International Financial Reporting
Standards.
 Be able to use power point office for presentation and term papers.
 Be able to customize the power point environment.
 Create a customizing Design Template (Slide Show)
