Identify human activities that speed up
or trigger landslides.
(S11/12ES-If-33)

1
Dear Learners, I hope you are doing good and ready to learn another lesson on
the human activities that trigger landslide.
Does human activities a contributing factor
in causing landslides? If yes, what are these
human activities that trigger landslide in your
community?

In this module you will learn about the

different human activities that trigger landslides in Figure 1http://region5.mgb.gov.ph/articles/208-
your community. So let us begin. mgb-ro-v-halts-illegal-quarrying-in-buhi-camarines-

After studying this module, you are expected to :

1. identify human activities that speed up or trigger landslides;
2. explain how human activities trigger landslides; and
3. give practical ways to lessen the occurrence of landslide in your
community.

Extraction the action of taking out something, especially using effort or force.
Excavation the action of excavating something, especially an archaeological site.
Landscape is the visible features of an area of land, its landforms, and how they
integrate with natural or man-made features.
Degradation is the act of lowering something or someone to a less respected state

2
Reservoirs is an artificial lake where water is stored
Irrigation is the supply of water to land or crops to help growth, typically by means of
channels.
Impermeable meaning not allowing fluid to pass through.

Let us check what you already understand about the new lesson. Answer the test below.
Direction: Write TRUE, if the statement is correct and FALSE, if it is incorrect. Write
the letter of the correct answer in your notebook.

1. Hazard mapping locate areas prone to slope failures. This well permit to identify
avoidance of areas for building settlements.

2. Land development is changing of landscape from a natural or semi-natural state

for a purpose such as agriculture or housing which alters the shape of a slope, or
which imposes new loads on an existing slope ·

3. Land pollution is the degradation of earth's land surfaces often caused by human
activities and its misuse. Industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals, and improper
use of soil.

4. Quarrying is an excavation or pit, usually open to the air, from which building
stone, slate, or the like, is obtained by cutting, blasting, etc.

5. The public should be educated about signs that a landslide is approaching thus,
safety measures may be taken to reduce the impact

ID YOU GET IT ALL RIGHT? IF YES, YOU ARE AMAZING!

3
Before we continue, let us have a review of the important ideas you have learned
from the previous lesson.

Direction: Using the hazard map below, identify the area with high risk of lahar flow.
Write the answer in your notebook.

HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT SPEED UP OR
TRIGGER LANDSLIDES

A landslide is any geologic process in which gravity causes rock, soil, artificial fill
or a combination of the three to move down a slope. It can be triggered by weathering
of rocks, earthquakes, volcanic activity and human activities.

Landslides can cause a significant number of fatalities which are link in human
activities. Some of these activities are excavation, over land use, mining, quarrying and
burning of grasslands.

a. MINING is the extraction of valuable

minerals or other geological materials from
the earth. It uses explosives underground
are like mini-earthquakes that can cause a
landslide.

b. QUARRYING is an excavation or pit,

usually open to the air, from which building
stone, slate, or the like, is obtained by
Figure 3A view of a landslide caused by Typhoon Goni that
cutting, blasting, etc. buried miners and their families in Mankayan, Benguet in

state for a purpose such as agriculture or housing which alters the shape of a
slope, or which imposes new loads on an existing slope ·

d. LAND POLLUTION is the degradation of earth's land surfaces often caused by

human activities and its misuse. Industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals, and
improper use of soil.
e. EXCAVATION is the process of moving earth, rock or other materials with tools,
equipment or explosives for constructions to create building foundations,
reservoirs and roads
f. DEFORESTATION is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land which
involves the conversion of forest land to farms or economic infrastructure use
which destabilize the already fragile slopes.

8
WAYS TO LESSEN THE OCCURRENCE OF LANDSLIDE

Many human-caused landslides can be avoided or mitigated. Here are some:

• Water is the most common cause of unstable slopes, landslides, and

erosion. Check your home's drainage system. Make sure drainage system
directs water away from home foundation.
• Vegetation cover protects land from landslides and soil erosion. Thus,
efforts should be made to maintain greenery particularly on slopes.
• Trees should be planted on slopes and slopes base to prevent erosion.
• Minimizing irrigation on the surface of the soil.
• During construction of a building on a slope, the design that suits the
natural slope should be adopted.
• Proper land use measures. Adopt an effective land-use regulations and
building codes based on scientific research.
• Look for changes to your surroundings that may signal the likelihood of
landslide activity, such as leaning fences or walls.
• Do not put waste on the slopes of your community
• Dewatering or installing impermeable membranes on existing slide areas
to prevent oversaturation of soil due to rain/water.
• Direct methods of preventing landslides such as modifying slope
geometry, using chemical agents to reinforce slope material, installing
structures such as piles and retaining walls, grouting rock joints and
fissures, diverting debris pathways, and rerouting surface and underwater
drainage.
• Hazard mapping locate areas prone to slope failures. This well permit to
identify avoidance of areas for building settlements.
• The public should be educated about signs that a landslide is approaching
thus, safety measures may be taken to reduce the impact.
