Effect of the rake angle in orthogonal machining

1. Introduction:

In the past, several theories have been produced that predict the effect of the working
Normal rake angle 𝜸𝒏𝒆. and the mean friction angle 𝛃 on the shear angle ɸ.
Two of the better theories are those by Ernst and Merchant and Lee and Shaffer.
Ernst and Merchant: 𝟐ɸ + 𝛃 − 𝜸𝒏𝒆 = 𝝅 𝟐
Lee and Shatter : ɸ + 𝛃 − 𝜸𝒏𝒆 = 𝝅 𝟒
In This experiment investigates the effects of rake angle on specific cutting energy𝑷𝒔 ., the
shear angle. The apparent shear strength of the work material, and the mean friction angle.
The results are pampered with the theories represented.

2. Equipment:
1. Lathe
2. Tubular workpiece of 85/15 brass
3. Two component dynamometer and necessary recording equipment.
4. High speed steel cutting tool with normal rake angles of 15, 25, 35 and 45

3. Procedure:

For a cutting speed at 0.2 m/s (40 ft. /min ) and a feed of 0.5 mm (0.02 in )
The cutting force components 𝑭𝒄 and 𝑭𝒕 and the chip thickness ac are measured
As described for each rake angle in Experiment 3.

The parameters 𝑷𝒔 ,β Andɸ are calculated using Eqs

and plotted against the working normalrake. Finally the
sheer angle ɸ is plotted against 𝛃 − 𝜸𝒏𝒆 .
