Reading is fun! Invite the child to have fun reading this book to you. Below are strategies
you can use Before, During, and After reading. Depending on the child’s ability, you can:
● Read aloud to the child. Make your voice as expressive as possible.
● Read aloud with the child, either together, at the same time, or taking turns.
● Have the child read aloud to you. If the child struggles, help him/her read the words.
Before Look at the cover and at the pictures inside the book together.
Reading Ask: “What do you think this story will be about?” "What do you
usually do in your Science class?"
During As you read, or as the child reads to you, pause from time to
Reading time to check his/her understanding. For example, ask:
• "Who are Mrs. Post's students?”
• “What did Rusk do with the egg he brought?“
• "The students will again bring solids next Monday. What do
you think they will bring this time?”
• "What did Trish do to describe liquids?"
• "What are the characteristics of gas?"
• What are other examples of gas?
If you come to a word that you think the child may not know, ask:
• “What is a “vest”?
• “What is another word for “gasp”?”
• “How do we say "raw" in Flipino?
Talk about the word’s meaning if the child does not know it.
