WHAT IS
FUNTIONALISM?

ACCORDING TO NASSER
MUSTAPHA, THE
STRUTURAL-FUNCTIONAL
PERSPECTIVE DEPICTS
SOCIETY AS A COMPLEX
SYSTEM WITH MANY
INSTIUTIONS OR PARTS
THAT WORK TOGETHER
TO PROMOTE SOLIDARY
AND STABILITY.
THIS PERSPECTIVE
FOCUSES ON SOCIAL
ORDER, FUNCTONS AND
SYSTEMS AND
INVESTIGATES HOW THE
RELATIONSHIPS AMONG
INSTITUTIONS
CONTRIBUTES TO THIS
ORDER AND THE
SURVIVAL OF THE
SOCIETY AS A WHOLE.

FUNCTIONA
LISM
The key concepts of
functionalism
Society is an...
equilibrium
functionalism sees each part of society as
being interrelated and interdependent.
It makes sure that each part fulfills its
function properly, therefore, maintaining
equilibrium.
Change in this system must be orderly and
any change in one institution will happen to
call propelling them to a new state of
equlibrium.
FUNCTIONS
From the functionalist point of
view, society is a system of several
elements. A component or
institution of a nation, family,
religion, economy, education, etc.
Functionalists assume that each
part or component contributes to
society in the same way that each
part does. Organs in the body
contribute to its efficient
functioning. For functionalists,
Society, therefore, performs the
functions necessary to maintain
order in society
CONSENSUS
As social beings, humans are
constantly aware of others,
anticipating what others will think,
feel, and most importantly, do.
Various branches of social psychology
have addressed problems arising from
this basic predictive need, particularly
impression formation, interpersonal
relationships, and group stereotypes.
Social consensus perception is the idea
that other people's thoughts, feelings,
and behaviors are similar to your
own.
Interdependence
Functionalists see each part of society as being interrelated and
interdependent, contributing to the overall maintenance.

Any change will affect all parts of the system. Functionalism believe
everyone in society has a part to play causing them to be interdependent
of individuals, this influences the smooth running of society.
Each person has their status in society and that comes with a role. One person can
have multiple different roles to perform. For example, an individual may be a doctor
which represents their position while they also may be fulfilling the role of a parent
or a husband/ wife.
