BUKIT KELAM

Once upon a time, there lived two magical people named Bujang Beji and Temenggung Marubai.
Both of them have a job as a fisherman, but have very different characteristics. Bujang Beji has
an arrogant and envious nature, while Marubai has a humble nature. Bujang Beji catches fish in
Simpang Kapuas river, while Marubai catches fish in Simpang Melawi. Bujang Beji always
brought home all the fish, both big fish and small fish. As a result, the fish in Simpang Kapuas
are shrinking. Unlike Bujang Beji, Marubai always releases small fish and only brings big fish.

One day, the declining fish population at Simpang Kapuas made Bujang Beji's catch less and
less. Bujang Beji who got a few fish saw Marubai bringing a lot of big fish. A sense of envy also
came to Bujang Beji. Driven by jealousy to defeat Marubai, Bujang Beji catches fish using
poison. The poisoned Kapuas river fish got drunk and floundered on the surface of the river. In
this way Bujang Beji can get fish in large quantities even more than what Marubai gets.

However, not only is the population shrinking, the fish in the Simpang Kapuas river are also
getting depleted due to exposure to poison. Bujang Beji's jealousy grew even more when he saw
Marubai still bringing a lot of fish. Bujang Beji who is filled with envy has an evil plan to dry up
the Simpang Melawi river so that Marubai can no longer get fish. With his magic, Bujang Beji
split the top of the rock. He then carried the big stone with both hands. Unwittingly Bujang Beji,
an angel was angry to see his actions that arbitrarily cut the top of the rock.

Suddenly, the nymph sent a lightning bolt and grabbed Bujang Beji's body. Bujang Beji, who
didn't expect to be struck by lightning, was shocked and the big rock fell. How angry he was to
know there was an angel who sent lightning. When he wanted to lift the fallen stone, Bujang Beji
had difficulty. Part of the rock was apparently buried very deep into the ground. Bujang Beji did
not manage to lift it either. Seeing that his plan failed, he prepared to take revenge. He
accidentally planted the Kumpang Mambu tree. Within a few days, the tree grew tall and reached
the sky.

Before climbing the tree, he made offerings to the forest animals so as not to interfere with his
plans. It seems Bujang Beji forgot to give offerings to termites and bears. Without waiting long,
the termites and the bear gnawed at the Kumpang Mambu tree. The termites followed with their
troops. Meanwhile Bujang Beji was about to reach the sky and suddenly the tree shook because
the termites and bears were successful. The Kumpang Mambu tree fell immediately after being
gnawed. Bujang Beji fell from a height, causing his death. His plan failed to drain the Simpang
Melawi river and avenge the actions of the nymphs. The place where the giant rock fell became
known as Bukit Kelam.
