Orthopedics is a specialty of medicine, which specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and
rehabilitation for injuries and diseases in the musculoskeletal system.
This system is complex, because it includes
joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and also the
muscles that allow normal mobility for people
to be active in daily activities. In times past,
orthopedics was dedicated especially to the care
of children suffering from deformities in the
spine or limbs, orthopedics today is dedicated to
people of all ages, from newborns with the
famous clubfoot, to young athletes who are in
need of arthroscopic surgery and also the
elderly with arthritis. Any human being has the
possibility of breaking any of his bones.
An orthopedic doctor is in charge of problems that directly affect the musculoskeletal system.
This doctor is specialized in: The diagnosis of injuries or disorders, drug treatments, surgeries
or any other type of these.
He also specializes in rehabilitation by recommending physical exercises or therapies to
restore normal mobility, joint strength and full function to the affected area. They also focus
on prevention, providing information or treatment plans that can prevent injuries and slow
the progression of disease. Most of these specialists are dedicated to general practices, others
may specialize directly in the feet, hands, shoulders, spine, hip or pediatrics, some are
specialists in different disciplines.
The orthopedic surgeon is the doctor who must have a broad ability to diagnose and treat
present injuries and diseases in the muscles and bones (musculoskeletal system). This
specialist studies six years in medical school, one more year in the partner service. (Dr.
Esteban Castro, Jul 11, 2019).
Orthopedics is a specialty that works by treating different anomalies of our body with respect
to its muscles or bones, as mentioned above, thus seeking to improve the patient's discomfort.
When a person begins to have muscle pain and especially back pain, they should immediately
go to the orthopedist.

In addition to being a general specialty of the musculoskeletal system, it is also related to

different specialties of medicine, one of the main ones is traumatology, which is the medical
specialty that is dedicated to the treatment of traumatic injuries of the bones, muscles, joints
and tendons. These injuries can be congenital or acquired throughout life. If the injury
presented by the patient requires an operation, the trauma doctor will be in charge of carrying
out the surgical procedure.
Orthopedics is related to other areas such as: neurology, angiology, psychiatry,
physiotherapy, primary care medicine, among others. So other doctors who may be part of
the orthopedic team include:
1. Neurologists.
2. Pain specialists.
3. Primary care physicians.
4. Psychiatrists.
5. Specialists in sports medic.

Orthopedics is important because it is responsible for maintaining the proper functioning of

the musculoskeletal system, which is an organ system that includes bones, joints, muscles,
tendons, ligaments and cartilage that provide support for the body and allow movement. So
when it fails, either due to injury or illness, orthopedic doctors help patients to recover the
functioning of this system.
